Hello all, my brother was nice enough to give me a slightly rough 2003 501FE. The bike has sat for about a year and needs some attention. I knew very little about Husabergs so have spent some time on this site to get up to speed. [Great site, by the way]. This leaves me with some questions.
  1. 1. work with stock carb or upgrade? jetting recommendations for either?
  2. 2. wait for ignition to fail or be proactive and change/upgrade now? and if so who does this work in the states?
  3. 3. where can i find plastics and a seat cover for this bike?
  4. 4. if i want an auto clutch which will work and what mods will I have to make? [there seams to be a few differing opinions on this]
  5. 5. anything else you guys can think of that may help me get this animal back on the trail?
Thanks in advance for any help

Sounds like a good project. You are mean teasing us like that though. I/we thought you were giving it away!!

1) You can find an FCR for around 300 used or new around 500.

Idk about the ignition.

Plastics MotoXotica, or there were some in the classifiesds.

Seat cover, I'll trade you a mint blue oem 05' seat for yours, but only if you let me ride it once you get it sorted. (I wanted to get a step seat done anyway @ Gutz racing)

I believe the KTM rfs engines use the same rekluse clutch.
I have one in my 550.

Ditto on the teasing! Oh, and there's no such thing as a "free" bike. It's just a cheaper starter hole to throw your hard earned money into.

Dan at Motoxotica is a great source for both parts and advice. Rick at Boss Offroad in Oregon is too. Taffy is a board member that can hook you up with parts if you can't find them locally. And, there are some amazing contributors here Bush Mechanic, DaleEO, and a number of others that I can't think of off the top of my head until I have coffee.

HeimirBardason recommended here that the pre-2004 bikes' stator cover be taken off after each ride, the stator sprayed with wd-40 and allowed to dry. trouble free since 2001 or '99 or something?

and as stator's condition may now be unknown I'd look into keeping a spare on hand

dellorto is said to be good if refurbished, but have also read about people being happier with fcr's

The carb can work well with a rebuild kit.

There isn't really an upgrade for the ignition. Look for a used one on eBay, keep a spare handy, the send out for rebuild.

Boss has plastics and seat covers. So do guts racing.

You can send your clutch to efm and they will build you an auto. You can also use a rekluse for 2004 up in it, you just have to change to later model clutch discs.

There is an auto clutch on eBay for it now.

Read the documents ... There is a link in my signature. Should give you lots of info.

Thanks for all the great info guys. And sorry about the tease! Now I just need some free time and a little more room on the credit card.

some of the info you had isn't right BKL.

the later clutches started in 2003 so you're good for KTM kit straight in there.
I gave you the advice on the dell orto - plenty fine if refreshed and updated with one of my 'spruce up' kits.

if you don't mind losing 21 days then just wait for the day your stator fails. my first one ran for 8 years of racing herte in the UK through streams, ditches, rivers and a jet wash every weekend. but I covered mine in vasoline, siliconed the sideover on and the rubber s all aound and then drilled a 6mm hole up from underneath.

you'll find your starter wants to slip. when it does you'll need to get a later auto decomp and a modified spring which I do. you'll want to repair and strengthen the two starter gears so that they don't slip.

you should set the ignition timing line 1mm to the left of centre.

there's lots of other little stuff but that is your next 12-months sorted basically. I can get plastics of course but the blue seat has stopped and so has the blue rad/sidepanels

regards

Taffy

Thanks Taffy. I hope to get into this bike next week. Will hold off on cosmetics until I get the mechanics sorted. I will hit you up for the carb kit asap. Just to clarify, which Ktm auto clutch drops in? The Rekluse site lists several. EXP clutch for 250/300 04-11 is listed as RMS-6036. EXP clutch for 450/530 08-11 is listed as RMS-6032. Z-start clutch for husaberg 04-11 is listed as RMS-832 and Z-start clutch for KTM RFS 04-07 is listed as RMS-833. The EXP clutch is cheaper but I believe everyone is using the Z-start in the 'berg? Also, would I use KTM clutch plates if using a clutch listed for a KTM?

from 2003 onwards they share the same clutch plates and drum etc.

you need to get up a 2004 parts book. this is the first year that Husaberg used the new KTM part numbers. you need to take a huge leap of faith and believe me when I say that the clutch is the same from 2003 to 2004 even though not a single part number was carried forwards.

then take those part numbers and stick them into a ktm parts search and glean info on just which models used that clutch.

then you can cross reference it properly or just listen to me and go out and get the KTM 2004-2007 RFS as we know they are the same.

regards

Taffy
