does anyone know why some bergs had only 4 gears , the cluster is the same as the 6 speed but missing two gears and one selector on the primary shaft .
the gears can easily be added , i am just a bit confused as to why this was done :?

The FC model for MX had a 4 speed and the enduro FE and the FX dessert bike had the six speed

Hi scrap,
I think some FC models had the 4-speed to shave a little weight while figuring you wouldn't need 5th and 6th on an MX track.

log

yep was looking at a 4 speed fc yesterday. simple fact a logjump said was that 1st and 6th not really needed on mx track

hence the small back sprocket on the 4 speeders. :)

my 501 has the 4 speed box , i thought about changing the gear cluster when i rebuilt it

but decided that i had plenty of grunt and it does'nt need anymore gears , it will virtually pull off in 4th with a 16 tooth front sprocket fitted.

if it had 6 gears i don't think i would use the lower ones :)

I have just changed over a FC450 to a six speed 380,hopefully it will make me a good enduro bike.

:D yes it's a must on lower cc bikes in order to keep them at the optimum rpm for power.

i remember the old road race 50cc bikes they had 12 an 14 gear clusters ,how confusing ?

"hmmm now do i want 9th or 10th gear for the corner , oops what gear was i in? " :D
