To the moderators, what is the go with people posting SPAM into some of the posts, do we need a more stringent method of verifying new members or do we just live with the scum bags stuffing with the forum.

apart from the one that i reported to schwim yesterday, which he sorted almost immediatly, i was unaware that we have alot of spam on here.

got any examples?

We already require OCR, IP and email verification, which stops all of the bots. The spam that is getting by this is submitted by a real person. You can tell the difference because the bot will have 10-20 posts per minute and usually don't stop until forced to. Human spammers post a few to grow their site maturity in the search engines and then move on. We could add 5 more methods of verification, but they'll just complete those five steps, just like any other real person wanting to use the web site.

Once the spam post is reported(or seen by me), it's life span is pretty short. There's more I could do, but to be honest, further effort will provide diminished returns.

I hope this doesn't sound dismissive. I've actually done a lot of study and written quite a bit on spam and combative measures. It offends me more than most. If it were more posts or existed on the forum longer, I would definitely take the next logical steps in stopping it. It seems that it's being taken care of fairly quickly, however.

thanks,
json

Hi Json, I have seen a very effective method of anti spam users.
Ask them a 'human' question at their registration, something like 'what is the bike brand which this site is focused on?' Answer: husaberg
No bot can get past that.

I think I might not have been completely clear above. No bots are getting past the current system. The registrations that are being used to post spam are being made by humans. It's easy to tell as the u-a string for bots always carry a telltale sign, like "libwww", "perl" or by the fact that it's too generic. Real user's browsers always have baggage, while bot's strings are pristine.

The human question is always the first thing I implement whenspam is interrupting the site's flow and in fact had it on the previous version of this site. The spam is being handled well, so I've not implemented it.

thanks,
json

FWIW, I have personally banned at least two spammers, and was in the process of banning the third when, after reading the above posts, Json was already in motion.

If you see anyone spamming contact one of the moderators-like me, or Json and I will check it out and ban them permanently. Json already has a lot going on as it is, further developing the this new forum, so let the moderators help out with this problem.

Thanks,

Dale
