hi and just wondering why my forks seem to be low so when i put my bike on a stand with the front wheel off the floor the chrome tube measures at 265mm from axle to dust seal, i have looked at some ktm 525exc forks wich i think would be the same and they measure at 295mm has a preveous owner lowered them for sm or are my forks standard.

any help would be great thanks

265 is quite good. 240 is more usual. if a KTM has 295 it has to be off-road suspension surely? 295 is what a husaberg has for off-road.

mine measure 300, 322mm total possible travel

there is a lot to be gained by increasing the travel, read weeds posts from the last few pages of the big fork tuning thread

roughly every 6mm increase is like going up a spring rate in bottoming resistance or you can keep the same bottoming reststance but gain the drop of a spring rate in plushness

hi and thanks for ur reply's lads, i did a search for weeds post but could'nt find a thing. as i use my bike for motocross now i get all the travel ov my forks and think im bottoming out, i done a oil change with 5w and set the air gap to 120mm and still not too good i then changed the air gap to 100mm and yet to try it out, but most ov all how do i get more fork travel, as the full travel is 165mm then bike on the floor with static sag of 30mm-35mmand then rider sag it dont seem to leave alot ov travel, is there something in the fork leg i remove or add to make the fork hight (tavel) bigger thanks

do u no how to get more fork travel taffy or if there was someting put in my forks to lower them wot would it be and were would it be for me to remove it

8O 8O 8O don't drill the Bottoming cones wait till the forks are working properly before making that kind of mod.

if you're only using 165mm and bottoming out then you need to open up the forks and see whats going on

if they have been lowered there will be a spacer around the damper rod between the (inside) top of the cartridge and the mid valve

Taffy doesn't know how to increase the travel and wouldn't do so because it will screw with his head oops i mean sag figures

links to how to

you could try looking for 75mm top out springs but I'm stumped as to why it is so short otherwise? the more usual are 22mm and most can convert to 34mm. but 75s with the 495mm long fork spring could have a bearing on it. so perhaps check the length of the two types of spring in your fork. the standard fork spring is 505 long.

ok thanks bush that helps alot ill open them up and have a look and keep u posted, and dont worry i wont drill the bottoming cones as it was only fork travel i wanted to gain as i dint think 265mm full fork travel was standard i thought i was atleast loosing 30 to 35mm

also check for coil binding, free length of spring -(minus) preload amount - the total compressed length (measure and add up coils) is the useful travel before coil bind

too much oil can make the forks "oil lock" that feels like bottoming, also try thinner oil if everything else is fine it frees up short stroke intial complance particulary on rebound.

hi bush sorry in the delay in response if eva u wanted to no well i opened the forks up and all seemed to be normal. think they must of been sm forks as the springs was shorter than normal 1s i also opened the dampening rod and that must of been a shorter version to normal 1s as there was no mods to them so the conclusion must be that they are sm forks so i sold them on fleabay and got myself a motocross set of wp forks.... thanks for ur replys m8
