fork seals,what best?

yep, as the topic says,what brand is best?
it seems every expert i talk to ,has a better than stock seal.
i know it is pretty hard to get any fork seal to last when you ride it through the mud & crap all the time + the upside down forks don't seem to last like the old right way up forks,but hey, i thought i would just ask the question & see what everyone is using?

Hi, genuine seals are ok but a good set of "seal savers " will extend the life of a fork seal no end with a bit off a clean now and then...........colin
 
I have put a fair amount of miles on now with a blown fork seal. I just cant't make working on shocks fun. Maybe the other one will go and it will even out. The only real problems (as fare as I know) are in the high-speed suff.

It's been pinching the front fender to the frame, is that a pre-load issue?
 
I have KYB seals in my forks, they were put in when I had new springs installed and a gold valve. They are meant to provide less stiction and help in the intial part of the travel. The forks feel heaps better, but could be due to numerous things that were changed, i have had no dramas with the seals in the 30 hours since installed.
 
I havent fitted any to my forks but word is that for the 48mm WPs that we have, the 09 kx450 seals are the shiznit, i would give it a go purely becasue so many people reckon they are good.

yeah mine is the 1st of 48mm wp forks bushy.
everyones recomendations are taken into consideration. i will be trying another brand next time if i still get the same out of these.
this time i'm trying "ari" fork seals,they are italian,the sale pitch on them sound good,but so do they all. :|
when i think about it now :idea: , i should have put a different brand of seal in each leg.
that would have been best to judge the longevity.
the last fork seals were through technic suspension & i wouldn't say i've had the best run out of them.
i only got about 8 months out of both sides. :cry:
and yes the chrome on the legs are still good & no stone chips.+ i have always run the "stubbie coolers" on them to wipe the dirt/mud off, & cleaned under them after every ride.
the only thing i think that could have gave them a premature death,was the air gap at 90mm.
i don't think they would be hydraulic locking @ that, but i'm probably relying too much on the air spring.maybe too much pressure for the seals to handle.i will go up a spring rate & increase the air gap,just to take a bit of load off the seals.
anyway lads i'm here for the long haul.... so i will let you all know how they go.

well i have a question for you guys. Is there a problem with the stock seals in the forks?

i'm asking because my 04 berg is now 6 years old and i have newer had to change the fork seals just replaced oil once or twice per year. ( knock on wood)
but i have had to replace the shock seal two or tree times, the seal gets worn.

I'm still on the original fork seals on my my '04 KTM 540. Whenever the seals started to leak, a cleaning out with a piece of film or a 0.006" feeler gauge 'cured' the leaking. I have never had any leakage problems with the shock seals.
 
10500 kms and 145hrs still on original seals. regular oil changes.
feels like steering bearings loose but it is acctually the forks (top bush) loose so I am gonna hafta pull em down whilst rebuilding bike.

popeye... do you add air to your forks to boost spring rate? mine have bleeder valves to relieve posative pressure which makes the forks alot more compliant. (as the air heats up the pressure increases which tends to make forks rigid rather than compliant.

yeah bro,i have bleeder valves,which i bleed all the time.
yeah i don't think that is the problem.the best i can do,is do what chas says,after every ride.
wals 07 550 berg has the same problem & i pretty sure he has been using the std wp seals.
another mate has a 510 husky & the fork seals on that thing are always leaking.he just can't stop it.they are worse that wp.
i had a look at it last time he had them off & he runs bleeders(so its not air pressure) & the bushes seem quite alright(so its not that).
must admit, i seem to be getting a bit better life out the seals than wals 07 550 ,but not much more,but certainly better than the husky, but then again i've been running the stubbie coolers & they haven't.
bushy, that rick from mx tech,didn't reply you with a brand of those (super seals), but i suppose he won't give that away will he?
those skf seals sounds good by the sale pitch too.less sticksion...but does that mean they are going to let more $hit in? dunno?
tell ya what,i hardly had any problems with my old xr600 (right way up forks),but then again it was like riding a wet sack of patatos over the big stuff.

the mx tech ones are the SKF ones.

but im only getting them from Julia, Davo and Taffy been coaching me in internet stalking :D
