can anyone explain simply how fork preload effects the handling of the bike only i dont tent to use it at all really on the new berg in fact i normally have no spacers with in the fork after a service

same as preload on the rear just for the forks.

i'll probably get shot down but i dont think of it as an adjustment like the compression and rebound. I tend to use it just to fine tune the correct weight fork spring.

basically more spacers will compress spring stiffening it up and making the bike ride higher in the travel and less the reverse.

like the rear i tend to use the minimal amount of preload that i can.

Just doing the final tweaks on my forks and like cypher says really, the preload comes into play after you have the right springs for fine tuning.
As far as handling and preload(for the front) there is no guidelines, just whatever feels good to you.
Basically, more preload means the front sits higher which makes the bike turn slower.
Less preload means the front sits lower, making it turn quicker.

I gave mine a little more and the ride was 100% improved...that's for me of course.

Any thoughts as to why the preload can back off, by itself...one side only?
