fork oil levels FE 02 - 501

So, having read all the archived posts..........
Just doing the seals on my FE501 02 - blew one big time last week on the local MX track - searches here say anything from 100mm to 150mm. Doc says 115 - 130 so guess 120 is as good a place to start as any.

This is with the springs out I guess ??

Given I do 50% MX practice track & 50% trail & enduro (all at a very basic level) do you think I should go less - say 100 - 110mm ??

I assume less air makes for a harder fork - copes with jumping better - whilst more air is softer for a more comfortable ride over a prolonged period ? or is that over simplifying??

PS Taffy - send us over a set of seals & dust covers please.

Ta / James.

The fork oil level is always measured with the fork leg compressed and no spring. More oil = stiffer damping - less oil = softer damping.

So 11 months on and the seals appear to have gone again. (All Balls).
Not badly - no oil running down the legs but an oil ring appears on every compression and the dust collecting at the base of the forks is oily.
Is this the beginning of a failure so I should replace now, or could this be recovered by just removing the dust seals & cleaning the area.

How long do you're seals last - I don't do a great amount of riding but do jump quite a lot at my local MX track.

Cheers.
