gday, can anyone tell me what the factory oil height is on forks off an 06 fe450. I just done the fork seals and put new 5w oil at 120mm from top of tube. the ride is way to stiff!! whatever the height was from factory was spot on.

the factory quote 110mm. all the oil does is stiffen/soften the last 3". if you were flying through your travel and now you're not then you must be a fat bugger! like me BYW!

i suggest you soften the comp under the fork.

120 should be fine. if you are no longer getting anywhere near max travel then try to loosen the comp clickers as i say.

not sure for that model fork, but I think the air chamber they fairly much keep the same from fork to fork. 120 is the least air chamber giving the most resistance. I believe 160 is the maximum, but you don't want to get too close to that as if seals leak you may burn your tubes.... blue colour. I think the standard is around 135 or go 140.

The best thing is to check the manual for the standard though, sometimes the bergs come with manual for shock and fork or at least a dealer can tell you.

sorry cannot be more percise.

I know this is a very late post, but I have an FE400E 02' model.
does anyone know how much oil i need to put in the forks?
just replacing the seals and not too sure of the oil to use either.

5w and fill to within 125mm of the top. how to is inthe doc.

Bushberger,
I suggest you loosen the RH fork pinch bolts and compress the front end a few times to align the fork legs and then do the pinch bolts up again. Also check that you have not over tightened the lower triple clamp bolts?

the tubes need to be brought to full extension, assembled without spring, before final oil level check. if not done the actual oil level will be higher than you want.

not suggesting that nobody knows this already, just putting a bit extra in on the off chance that someone needs it.

old 5wt oil of brand X may be considerably thinner than new 5wt oil of the same brand and there is a great chance that a different brand 5wt is a different viscosity even if compared to new original oil. look for peter verdone designs and his viscosity chart. Honda 5Wt is similar viscosity to motul factory line 2.5Wt. BTW Honda oil is the worst oil I ever tried in my forks

I need about 20% stiffer LS on the BV to work good on 20 hrs old oil than on new oil. it does cop a fair hammering in my bike though.

how much oil

Is there a close CC level for replacing the fork oil without total dissassembly of the forks? I just wanted to dump and pump out the old and drop some fresh in. The last time I did the full dissasemble I believe it was around 750cc per leg.

This is on a 02 400fe

RE: how much oil

i'd say 475cc was all i could say was safe.

RE: how much oil

Now that you mentioned it. I belive it was more like 550 aside. I know it's just over a quart for both legs. I'm going to break them down correctly and will let you know what it needs for 120mm air gap based on the "DOC" which is wonderfull by BTW!
Thanks
