fork external preload adjustment

As it came there was 40mm of fork static sag. Turning the preload adjuster on the top of the 08 forks made a little difference, but not much yet. Can pre-load be put in on top of the springs in the normal way to give the external adjustment more scope and what would be the maximum that could be put inside the fork and still allow maximum use of the exernal adjustment nut?

the forks springs should ideally only be loaded by 4-6mm. the idea of the preload adjuster is to get you out of jail at various events. you should strip the forks and see what the preload on the springs is before you even start. may turn out you need heavier springs but you have to check that its not the compression adjsters etc etc first. but you knew that!

here's a little info from my 08 450, came standard with 35mm sag, was fitted with 4 4.8mm plastic pre load spacers on each side, 42 springs, now has 46 springs and only 2 4.8mm spacers each side 35mm sag, now rides great for me but need a revalve to handle the rocks and roots in my area
Hope this helps

thanks for the info. I am only running the 08 450 in so am looking at the static sag at the moment. Compression and rebound in standard settings. I made the point before using the bike at all to measure the static sag on the forks and shock just so I had a starting point and to note what changes will happen as things settle in. I have then set the shock sag at 100 mm as a start, but I have found the front a bit busier than I am used to on a berg. The forks came with 40 mm stategic sag. Busy in soft sand etc, not bad but not good. I was thinking 33 to 35 mm static fork sag would be good (and be a good match for the shock sag). Turning the external preload adjusters confirmed sorting things out, but as Taffy said it would be better to use these for fine tuning only. This weekend I will see what pre-loaders are inside the fork.
