Flywheel weight and rear tire grip?

Racing on a Husaberg 650 in SuperMoto, will a change from the heavier flywheel stock on FE model to the lighter flywheel from the mx model have any effect on the rear tire grip.Or what exactly does the flywheel weight affect?

A heavier flywheel will give seem to give you more traction because the engine will rev slower but it will also cause you to lose the fast rev you need to get from corner to corner.

my experience in 14 years of roadrcing was that the lighter the flywheel - the better. the engine revs quicker - especially at low revs, it can even change your jetting!

however, in my day we never "backed it in"! we never jumped either! i wouldn't expect these things to make much difference except on decel where i used to hold the clutch in and use both brakes. you the same?

you would need to blip the throttle lightly once before judging the moment to release the clutch.

slipper clutch?

i think i'm right in saying that there's no difference between the enduro and MX flywheels BTW.

on my ducati i got rid of about 12 pounds (yes 12) from the flywheel, starter bendix and the huge magnet from the stator, plus initially 2" and then years later another 2".

Another thought, the more weight that you have on the flywheel the greater its gyroscopic action. in other words the bike will not want to lean over into turns and change direction quite as easily, in slick mud this may be a good thing it may gain you more controllable hook-up yet sacrifice agility.

That's all very interesting.
I race my bike in flat track events, and it was suggested to me that, having heavy flywheel, will make bike easier to menage, at the moment my rear sprocket has 45 and most riders have 48-52 on back.

I was thinking to get heavy flywheel and larger sprocket like 48, this would hopefully, give me a quicker start of the line and less wheel spin/more control while sliding in to corner and drifting thru.

Any opinions greatly appreciated.
