Hi, New on here just bought myself an 03 FS650. i was given the parts to fit a starter motor, is this a good idea as i find it hard to start on the kick starter?

if you got the parts the you might as well do it if you're having trouble kickstarting it.

hi Dave and welcome. sound like a brit? where u from?

the starter motor system was all beefeds up in '04 i think?

basically, they fitted a stronger starter motor which in turn needed a different mounting bracket. i beleive that the sprague bearing was beefed up as well. you're wasting your time putting the old stuff on in that although it's there (so i agree in a way with cypher) it will frustrate you and be useless in no time at all.

i think they even uprated the cam and the decompressor the next year as well (just to piss you off mate!).

do a search chucking in all kinds of words and chase. another way is to into electrical and flick the subject pages. you'll get there.

regards kicking it. you can do the following

modify your dell orto
try the taff's crescent mod
get a good iridium plug
set the tappets
get a new camchain and also set the cam timing visually by slotting the camwheel and doing it properly
ignition timing should be checked and if poss check the TDC mark with the 'dead stop' method.

lot of work there but get stuck into it and learn about your bike.

swallow the doc as well!

welcome
I found the easiest way to Kickstart my 01 501 was to compleatly remove the auto decompression cable from the kick starter and use the manual one on the handelbar to kick it through a few times to prime and then bring it to tdc and pull the manual decomp in and just move the kicker a tic just past tdc. I mean JUST past and release the decomp bring the kicker back up to top and kick like a real man trying to break the kicker off. usually started by the 2 kick.
The button on the 01 always worked for me AFTER it was warmed up but never before it was warm.
good luck

there is a lineaweaver cam for sale. i have one fitted. i went to manual decomp only like bob says. took the auto off the cam and the auto off the kickstart. sorry dave, but there is a lot of work to getting them running nice but my '02 400 starts first or second kick.

all the things we put up - we learnt the hard way or from each other.

regards

Taffy
