Hello, first post!

I don't really know why I do this post but w/e.
So 2 weeks ago I got myself a '04 Husa 650 and I thought I'd ask some questions about it since the previous owner was completely clueless about everything I asked him.

So far I've changed the oil and filter two times, each with 5 hr intervals. Is this okay or should I do it more often or am I overdoing it?

I checked the valves the first time I changed the oil just to make sure, everything was fine! How often should this be done? 10-20 hrs?

Random one, are there any special things I should look out for during driving/maintenance?

And the last one, how often do I need to tear it apart and change piston, bearings, camchain etc, etc. So far it has been running about 20 hrs after the last time it was serviced at a local shop, should I get ready to do some heavier maintenance or is it okay?

I'm not retarded when it comes to doing mechanic work myself but this is the first bigger bike that I have and I was quite unlucky with my Husqvarna sm 125 so I always check twice when doing something, hence all these seemingly newbish questions.

My first language isn't english so go easy on me! :)

EDIT: Might aswell upload a shabby picture of it the moment I got home after buying it!

Welcome cool looking bike. Don't know any thing about your bike. But someone here will. You could look at some of the forums Good info.

Well i think you are overdoing the oil change. You should change it between 8-10 hours or even a few more hours if you are not racing with the bike and the oil filter you can change it each 30 hours. The valves should be checked around 25 hours. You got the right year model because since 04 the husabergs began to be much more reliable ( a lof of stuff in the engine were fixed) so congrats with your buy and enjoy it.

If you don't already have the service manual, get it here:

HUSABERG Pure Enduro - Older Documents

Download everything you can find that will be of use... we don't know how much longer it will be up on that website.

Oil - 5hrs is quite short for the oil changes. No harm there, just $$. Also, the oil filter doesn't need to be changed every time, but again, if you have the $$, do it.

Valves - Frequency as per manual. Every 3rd oil change is a good bet (talking 8 hr oil changes). If you want to do more frequently, no problem. More frequently will ensure that your valve train doesn't get a hard time with tight adjustments (or too loose).

Special things to watch for - There is nothing too crazy to watch for. If you have a breather mod done (top of crankcase), then watch for oil spilling everywhere at high revs. If no breather mod done, then watch for excessive oil entering the airbox at higher RPMs.

If you start hearing weird noises, common issues are the bearings on the balancer shaft and cam chain rubbing on engine case (too stretched). If there are weird noises on starting, the starter gear (sprague) has issues.

As always, watch for foreign materials on the drain plug, in the oil screen, and in the oil filter.

When you are taking the clutch cover/side case off, be super careful not to disturb the kickstarter shaft. Keep it pressed inwards. It has a tendency to want to push itself out of the engine slightly... once it does it wreaks havoc inside the engine. Just be sure to keep positive pressure inwards on that shaft when doing anything with the side case off. To access the mechanism in question, the clutch basket must be removed. If it feels weird, pull the clutch out and check it. Better safe than sorry.

Lots of discussion on oil, but the main consensus is that high end oil is preferable and more frequent changes are preferable... so strike a balance between quality and frequency.

Piston, bearings, camchain - These are usually good for 100-200 hrs (or more in some cases). The piston shouldn't really be an issue unless contaminents get in there (dirt, carbon, etc). Bearings... the main crankshaft bearings are sometime troublesome. Again, watch the drain plug for any weird materials. The balancer shaft sometimes has bearing issues, but it is truly case by case. In 2006 they updated the balancer shaft (they wen to one large bearing instead of two small ones like yours has). No consensus as to whether Husaberg changed this as a result of a design update or due to parts availability. Camchain... replace it every 100 hrs or sooner. Go off the service manual if you like... but a chain is cheap and it is very important to engine longevity. A new chain will help the valve system to stay timed properly.

Some months ago I was "retarded" when it came to maintenance, but I did a lot of research and tore down my own engine without issue. It is an easy bike to work on if you're motivated. Tooling isn't too specialized. Most stuff is available at the hardware store... or can be improvised. The parts are getting scarce, but Taffy has tons of stuff and is a great help. Check out:

Taffmeisters - Husaberg, KTM, Husqvarna, Gas Gas, dirt bikes - servicing, tuning, rebuilds, parts

Overall, you seem to be very cautious which is a good thing I suppose. Ride it hard and have faith. Oil changes are your best friend for longevity in these beasts.

All above info from a newbie... but a seasoned newbie.

Thanks alot mate, really helped me out! This bike has been getting total overhauls every 50h since the previous owners rode it quite hard AFAIK. But I'll continue to do oil changes every 5h since money is not a problem and I just want my bike to be top notch!
