I own a 2004 FE 450 which never e-started cold, ever.I would have to kickstart it, get it warm then it would start or crankover about 90% of the time. My battery is always fresh and the valve clearances are always set. Well , I finally upgraded the starter to the longer Mitsuba sm14 from the 650 Bergs 2004 or newer. I purchased the starter and bracket from Dan at Motoxotica. Low and Behold, it e-starts very easily , cold or hot, everytime!! I think its a very wise upgrade!

hi mate!

to make things really easy for me. can you put up what it was and what it is? i think you meant mitsubishi didn't you?

old and new starter

The old starter that didn't work very well came off of the factory 2004 Berg Fe 450. The stamp on the housing says MITSUBA sm-14, made in Italy. The new starter I installed came off of a 2004 or newer Berg Fe 650. The stamp on the housing also says MITSUBA sm-14 made in Italy. However, the housing is about 3/4 inch longer, thus a different bracket is needed. The part number on the box is 82040001000. They are not Mitsubishi.

RE: old and new starter

Speed2need,
I ride a 04 fe450e as well ,but mine has always started off the button...except when it was under water.

you'll have to excuse taffy if i recall he doesn't have a starter motor on his and all he knows about eveything else pushed this minor bit of info out of the way. :D :D

Yes, the longer SM-14 is the same as on the 550 and 650 and you can also find them on eBay. Many newer CR900 use them.

Example

Mitsuba is Italian? Or they manufacture parts in Europe?

the only reason i say that is because an awful lot of starter motors on cars and diggers, fork lifts etc come with the triangulated '3 diamonds' logo that colt mitsubishi used to use on their cars. i put two and two together and made five obviously!!!! apologies.

not sure if that was all in the melting pot with kawazaki heavy industries?

if it said japan i'd back myself to be right especially as the names are absurdly close to each other. however, if it says 'made in italy' there really isn't much argueing with that!

The Mitsuba company is Japanese they must now be stamping them out in Europe, I've rewound hundreds.

Sparks.

650 now needs a starter

Hi folks
I finally got the Fe 650 running. Took a stator and coil to make it run.
Now the electric starter is acting up. Does anyone know if the battery should be upgraded to a heaver one( is there one) or will the YTX5L-Bs support a larger starter such as the one used on the Honda 900 or 600.
I can make up the new mount but do not want to invest in a new starter if the battery will not keep up.
Can anyone help me in this area? Thanks guys I have had great support from all of you and I appreciate everything.
P.S. I started my Fe 350 last night for the first time. Sounds sweet. JIM

Be careful when you cross-ref with the Honda starters. Some don't fit.

yep, there is a heavier battery that's the same size and is far beefier for the job. the YTZ7S is the one you want. it has 130CCA instead of 65CCA if i remember correctly. the facts are all therte in the doc and i should think it's under upgrades.

as for the starter, well someone else here will get the facts right but they do do a better starter than the one found on my old '02 400e. but it's longer and you need a different mounting bracket from a later model. it should all tie up.

650 starter

Thanks Taffy

I appreciate the info on the battery. Now I need to see if anyone can help me get the proper model number for the starter, If anyone reads this and has updated the 02 650 starter please let me know what the starter is or what model if bike it comes off.
P.S. Thanks for all the help Taffy I started my Fe350 a couple of nights ago and rode it last night. I have a small leak in the new head gasket. Not dripping but has a wet feel to it. Do you think a couple of runs and maybe a retorque on the head would help or should I dissassemble it? Thanks for the info. JIM

650 starter update for 2001-2003 Bergs is 820.40.001.000

Matching update bracket is 820.40.002.000

Info from 2006 Parts Manual

nothing to lose jim! retorque it and see.

you can always trust uncle joe.... he always comes in when you need him!

there's an aussie called faktor, i think he did it?

i suggest you go into electrical and just trawl back through the pages. i do that instead of a search becasue the search feature seems to miss out so much. i bet within 10 pages you'll see it explained twice....

(fingers crossed now i've said that....)

Taffy

Thanks Joel

Thanks for the udate on which starter and mount I need. I have read a lot about starters but was not sure which one was best for the 650. It was real nice of you to supply both part numbers . You take care and thanks again. Bearbuster
