hi there, my fe600e runs like it has a powerband,it seems to die and even backfire slightly sometimes at mid revs then it takes off like a bullet,i have disassembled the carb and blown it out with compressed air a couple of times but it still does it,sometimes worse than other times,it also pops through the exhaust on deceleration.
i think i may have the carb settimngs set incorrect, can anyone tell me where the mixture should be and where the needle should sit, cheers rob

Does your bike have the older flat slide oval bored carb or the later round slide carb?? Check the 'Owner's Doc!' for info regarding the round slide carb. My '96 FE600e had the earlier flat slide carb, and after considerable tinkering with the jetting it was reasonably decent but never perfect. I finally replaced that carb with a 40mm flat slide Mikuni carb and never looked back.

98 FE 66, From memory so I may be a bit off.

K51 needle, second notch from the top ( I think)
170 mainjet
33 pilot jet
DR 272 air jet
idle screw 1 turn (I think)

Runs very well, I did a 100 mile Dual sport run last weekend in Wisconsin and it ran great!

Does pulling the choke on a tiny bit when it is popping & farting make it worse or better? If it gets worse it must already be running rich at that throttle opening. My first check would be for a worn metering needle and needle jet. They do seem to wear a bit.

Taff keeps most of this stuff in stock, along with great advice what is actually needed.

schultzy,i follwowed your guide and all is well, when i pulled the top of the carb out to check the needle i un did the retainer bolt under the spring, the clip feel out then the needle,it wasall just sitting in there!, i replaced the needle with a new one and it goes fine, only thing is that the mixture screw is out about 3.5 turns? if i bring it to 1 - 1.5 it runs terrible, its not bad at this setting, cheers rob

hi all,got it sorted for its maiden voyage and went out bush today and covered 110 kms with no problems whatsoever,we did a lot of tight trails and a lot of rocky hill climbs,it started 1st or 2nd kick of the kick starter and was a pleasure to ride,i just need to get the e start right, cheers rob
