Please help! I have been a big bore rider for years but always 2-stroke. I have just purchased a 97 600 E that has only been rode twice and sitting for 2 years without being started. I have already completely serviced the bike and it seems to be running fat. A little smoke (black) even at idle. Is this normal? The old plug was dark in color. I have also seen an ignition cooler mod on the web and want to know if this really works and if it would help with the longevity. Is there any "patterned failures" associated with this year-size? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, volvonut
p.s this is my first attempt at web stuff, so I don't know if I'm even putting this in the correct place.

re: new kid on the block :)

heya volvonut,

It shouldn't be belching smoke. If it is, then it sounds like you're going to be doing some adjustments to the carb.

As for the ignition mod, which one are you speaking of? Drilling a hole in the case? Could you post a link to where you found it so we know what we're discussing?

Welcome to the forum, and even the internet :) You've done just fine thus far.

thanks,

Congratulations on such a rare find. A small amount of black smoke is normal. After the bike warms up the amount should diminish. With regard to the ignition there are three main causes of failure. First I would say is water ingress into the stator caused by the ignition cover not sealing all that great. Remove the cover every wash, wipe out any moisture and give it a shot of WD-40. Second is vibration. Keep all the nuts and bolts tight. Especially the motor mounts. I am not quite sure that heat is really a problem but the stator venting mod does exist for a reason I suppose. On my 97 FX600 the ignition has remained reliable and I did not vent the cover. I would definitely do the breather mod though. Many versions exist with the end result being the same.

One of many breather Mod threads

Hi json:

Its from the old Tech Site I believe Ignition Cooler Mod

Definitely sounds like Carb. issues. Float height, plugged air bleed, fuel screw out too far, too big pilot, worn needle/needle jet, needle raised too much. Many possibilities. Volvonut? Not from Sweden, you don't own it?

I am a Volvo nut, the bike however was just me being in the right place at the right time! :) I have always been interested in Scandinavian stuff due to my roots. I've been riding 500 2-strokes a long time and this bike impresses me! Thanks to everyone for the info.
