howdy all, this my my first attempt at chatting in a forum,so here i go, i have just rebuilt the bottom end on my fe600e elduro as well as giving the cylinder head a once over, the piston and rings looked fine as there was no issues with smoke before, but now when its cold it looks like its blowing heaps of oil straight into the exhaust, but it clears up as soon as it warms up,then its fine all day, any ideas?:(

Did you inspect or replace the reed valve? If it is broken or a piece of grit, bearing material or something gets in and holds it open that will cause it to smoke.

hi there, excuse my ignorance, but im not too sure where this reed valve is and what it does,i have heard about it on various forums, could anyone shed some light on this for me, cheers rob

Its down under the clutch. Download a manual from the downloads and have a look. Its a fibreglass, I think, petal about 20 mm long from memory. You need to pull the clutch cover and with a quality screwdriver you can remove it. The manual says to remove the clutch but I haven't found it necessary. OTTOMH its a 150 hr service item. A bit of blue loctite when you reassemble is a good idea.

ok,now i remember seeing it there, i didnt touch it when i put the engine back together,i will have a look at the manual, what does it actually do?

Its a one way valve, as the piston comes down it opens and oil is pumped out, piston goes up and valve closes and oil more or less stays in gearbox. If its not closing properly it'll suck oil in.

ill go into the shed tonite with a few stubbies, pull it apart and have a look, ill let you know how i go, by the way, should i leave it a one litre of oil?

ok,i pulled the reed out,now i just need to know how much crap under this valve will cause the amount of smoke/oil its blowing out when cold, lots of crap or even a small amount of crap?

don't leave any crap in there. inspect the reed for cracks and warpage. put it back in the opposite of the way you took it out.
i'm betting on valve stem seals or the rings aren't seating.

hi there, when i pulled the reed out there was a bit of crap there, not much but probably enough, i have replaced the valve guides, reground the valves/seats and replaced the stem seals, the top end is fine,i also have pulled the piston and rings and had a good look at them before i put it together, they look like they had been replaced before i got the bike, when i pulled the reed out it had a buckle in the side,i bought one today from the local dealer and it cost me a total of $3.20, i will fit it tonite and fire up the old ****, will let you know how it goes

Years ago I found that the cause for sporadic oil burning in my '96 FE600e was due to faulty oil control rings from the factory.

i replaced the reed and changed the oil again, the smoke issue is a lot less but its still there after a couple of rides, funny thing is that if i drain the oil and let the bike sit over night, top it up with oil and start it there is no smoke what so ever,so im guessing that the oil is running into the crankcase from a different area?

it's possible - and i'm not sure - the rings are handed and you may have the compression ring in upside down?

just a thought. either way, you should have glaze busted the bore and given the ol **** a new set of rings. it was the least she deserved for services done.

Taffy

These bikes always smoked a little bit at start up even when new.

Wossner has new pistons for these bikes (no longer available from Husaberg anyway) and offer an alternate size that is just slightler larger than standard for slightly worn or honed a few times cylinders.
