Hi all,

recently rebuilt my 550 for the first time. what a humbling experience.

live in Australia, still not sure where the best place for parts is. had the top end inspected at Suttos MC supply. gave me their recommendation -quoted me 1800 for parts without labour. Bit shocked there... can anyone recommend somewhere?

in the end i got a new wiseco piston, liner was okay, new valves, timing chain, etc... mostly from bikebandit, didnt do main bearing because i felt ill-equipped, probably should of having heard some of the horror stories... keeping a close eye on the magnetic plug for signs of wear.

had an issue with gasket cover O ring - fell down as i was installing cover, can testify 90 percent of water ends up in the case, an annoying, silly and time consuming mistake - install o ring with engine in the horizontal! -common sense.

bleeding the clutch, was alot harder than anticipated, cam chain very fiddly, tensioner also annoying, some seals on the clutch cover were hard to remove and install without damaging them. the right tools make the job so much more enjoyable.

a solid 6 weeks after i anticipated and with alot more blood sweet and tears, she is running very nicely. should have taken pictures throughout the process... fingers crossed i wont have to see the inside again for some time yet...

- highly recommend good organisation of parts, I like ice cream tubs away from moist environment

- this handy table held the case tight for those tough 110nm nuts

-fiance on the bike, what a babe!

I just fully rebuilt my 550 in Canberra definitely a big job but all went well, had good tech support from ORANGEBERG he's the guru. From what I know the main thing you should do if nothing else is the mains especially when the work is in splitting the engine. Hopefully yours will be ok but the inner race of that main looks quite worn to me. Good luck, keep a close eye on it and you'll be right.

main bearings are a must do replacement on the 550 if you have got it apart even the originals are crap even when new, its showing some wear in the photo my guess is you will have it apart again soon. The 550 was the hardest of all the capacities for failed mains.
Another thing that must be checked is the crank enfloat and its important to adjust it whilst the crank is out you need it to be .5mm or it will smash the bearing and destroy the couterbalancer $700.
I wish you the best of luck but im around if you need help.

ahh... maybe i should've done it... grrr

will keep an eye out for wear, might be hearing from me in the future mr orange. im sure it will be an easier job second time around if it comes to that. I have no idea how to measure... or exactly what is 'endfloat'...

some lessons to learn...

Sounds as though I will be rebuilding my 550, at the end of the day yesterday I could hear a metallic wearing whining sound that seemed to match the speed of the bike, any pointers would be much appreciated. I'm sad now :(

You measure the crank endfloat with a dial indicator, you can pull the flywheel cover off and measure it. It's basically the side ways movement of you crank, I think as the crank flexes a fair bit on the 550s if there isn't any endfloat the bearings destroy themselves fairly quick. So higher load or high rev riding is more likely to cause damage.

Not sure about the whinning, but mains knock when they have $hit themselves it happens very quickly, you need to check your magnetic drain plug too see whats on there. Post up some pictures on here and the gurus on here can probably help. Also if you give you flywheel a shake you might be able to feel if the mains are gone.

Compliments on just digging in and going for it man. Tell your girl to wear boots when she rides though  .

Okay, So

Some lateral movement in flywheel is okay???, nothing is bad and too much is also bad. will keep an ear and eye out for changes. Thanks for the help guys. -Josh, she's just that hardcore.
