FE550 Bent Bars, Replacements? | Carby Overflow when Hot

Couple of issues guys

Managed to somehow bend the bars on my '07 FE550, Who's running aftermarket bars, what do you recommend when it comes to handlebars?
I have had a search and it's all confusing, what works better for what?
I'm around 6ft 1, If height counts for anything

Also, when the bikes hot (after riding) when I turn the bike off fuel drains out of one of the carby overflow hoses until I turn off the fuel tap, Also happens when I drop the bike but I assume thats because the engine stalls, I haven't been able to check if the fuel still drains whilst riding
Anyone know what it could be, or which hose goes to where?

Thanks
Matt

I have to repalce the Husaberg bars straight away. they are EX bars and the SX bars are better. the SX bars are straighter and therefore you end up 1" forwards.

there are graphs to help. I once bought a set of carmichael bends and again they helped. I'm broad across the shoulder.

Does my bike come with oversize bars? I've heard there are 2 sizes, 22.2mm (Which is standard bicycle size) And 1 1/8", What size did Husabergs come with?

Also he bars widen at the triple clamps, is that something generic sized or does it need to be considered?

Totally beginner when it comes to motorbikes, With bicycles the diameter is in the middle here it is clamped in the stem, no the actual diameter of the bar

May not be saying this right but I'd look at the float bowl valve. May need cleaning/replacing and not a bad time to check float bowl height with the carb off look at Manuel for settings

the bars that are 22mm are called traditional or 'straight' bars and are the same length all the way. 'fat bars' are thicker down at the clamps and that is what all Husabergs come with.

so you'll need 'fat bars' whtever happens that are 28.5 at the clapmps all bars are 5/8" on the ends.

I like the CR high bend bars, and yes 1 1/8" bars are what you need, they go by a few names depending on the company who makes them.

If you drop the bike, it's normal for gas to overflow out the carb hoses. On the fuel over flowing after turning the motor off, turn the petcock on but don't start the bike and see if it overflows after a short time. Sometimes the float needle and seat get stuck, tap the carb with the back side of a screwdriver to see if you can get them to seat, otherwise there may be dirt in there or they are just worn out.

Thanks, any particular model people seem to be going with? or know a comparable protaper model?
I read somewhere that the magura bars are 120mm in height
This seems extremely high, comparing it to other brands, is this correct?

It's only out of one hose, and it doesn't drip... I mean it literally pours out, I have to get in the dirt and turn off the tap or else i'll lose all of my fuel. I'm sure it's normal to lose some fuel but it would probably drain my whole tank in minutes if I didn't turn it off. So a when i've dropped it or turned it off once, it just poured out, But another time when I just turned the bike off it was a slow drip.

If I can figure out which hose it's coming from, can that lead me in a particular direction as to what it could be or not?

Thanks
Matt

I actually just found some original Magura Ex bars on ebay for $135AU new, might as well just go with them because I can't seem to find any similar bars made by protaper or any other major brand

I had to replace the float needle and seat in my 07 because when I stopped, it just kept leaking, they're a rubber tipped so they wear out.

well it depends what you thought of my comments. nobody knows what you THINK or THINK YOU NEED?

at 6' 1" you need some sort of lift. I can give you some dimensions if you like? they are 50gbp over here I think (I can't be arsed to look) and you get sweep, lift, width the lot to choose from?

I've looked at renthal and protaper and a few others and the only bars that had anything close to the 120mm height didn't have enough sweep

I ended up going with the magura bars just because they were 20% off today only, and the only ones in Australia

I guess i'd also like to keep it OEM and I reckon they've been fine, ordered some hang guards to go with them as well as I want some full wrap ones.

Now all I really need to do is figure out carby, if I can pinpoint which hose it's coming out of, does that indicate where on the carby the problem is coming from? How difficult is it to remove the carby, what needs to be taken out beforehand?

Hey Matt,

If you want a brand new Husa/Ktm set of fat bars and can find cheap shipping from Canada their yours :) Got some sitting in the shop collecting dust. I use Pro Taper Windham Low myself.

Just a thought??

Check float bowl drain screw. There is a drain screw to run off the fuel/water lol in the bowl. This will flow like all hell and allow the bike to run normally. Should the float needle seat be leaking this will also allow run off but can flood the bike and make it run funny as it can over fuel. follow the hose a check to see if the screw is open??

Bugger, bought em already but thanks for the offer :)
Really nice of you

Yeah well it seems like it only starts leaking when the bike is off so I kinda doubt it'd be the screw, unless it expanded or something along those lines :p

It's kinda hard as where I am I have to drive out to ride anywhere, and on the last ride Dad broke his arm :p

To pull the carb, do I need to remove the battery or rear shock or is it possible to do by just pulling it straight out?

Also i'm worried about having to take off the throttle cables, how hard are they to adjust?

Hi Matt,

PM me with your email address and I will be happy to send you the workshop service manual for your bike :) It covers most of what you will need to know and anything other we can work through

One more q, might pull the carb apart and give it a bit of a refresh, Is there any point replacing anything else while i've got it apart? A rebuild kit is like $90 which seems fairly steep since nothing else seems to be any issue haha

One thing you can do to see which overflow it is leaking from would be to ziptie a tiny rag to each tube and ride it a mile or so then check it and keep checking till you find it. Keep tubes away from each other so one doesn't leak on the other

Once it does start coming out it's really easy to tell what tube it's coming from :) Do you think that would indicate what area seems to be the problem?

I read this after you bought your bars, so too late. But for next time or for others, most of the bar manufactures list specs for all their bars. CR high bend and Pastrana FMX bend are the highest, last time I looked. Sweep is important, if it's not right for you, you can end up with cramping hands or forearm pump. I can't ride with the stock Maguras as they are too straight for me. I'm 6'2", Taffy said he's 6'1" and he likes the straight bend. It's horses for courses.

The best way is to sit on your bike the way you ride it, pretend your grabbing the bars but have your hand just above them. Draw an imaginary line through your hand (Or even hold a dowel or something in it to help) and compare the angle of that to the sweep of your bars to give you an idea of what fits you best.
