 Ihave purchased a used fe501e - 2000 . i frequent this form often . i noticed some chat on the cam bearings . my question is this . is there any way to tell if the previous owner has upgraded the top end bearings . the motor runs strong and i check the valves often , they are rarely out of adjustment . the top end is rather quiet for a berg . i would rather upgrade now than find out the hard way as i read another member did . also what would you guys estimate the cost would be to complete .. thanks ....

If you have the original Roller Rocker Assemblies they can/should be upgraded to 03 assemblies as seen here in Joe USA's most excellent gallery!

The size of the bearing was changed I believe. If someone doesn't come along and give you exact measurements I can shoot some pics of both back to back for comparison.

Hello, doctorcorey here. Hey, vinman1513, I hope you don't mind if I ask a question inside your forum, but I'd like to know from your responders if this upgrade is for specific years or models of bergs, or is it a general upgrade for all. Good luck with your 500! Corey

I have a brand new set that I would part with for $250. You should replace the cam bearings as well while you are in there.

Well I did a little checking. I am unable to identify the roller rocker assemblies that Joe USA has pictured in his gallery which he believes to be 03 assemblies used to update his 2000 501.

The part numbers (200.334.02) don't match anything in parts books from 96 to 05. Also the rockers Joe has pictured don't have the valve adjustment screw and locknut which the assemblies should include. These could have been a mid year preproduction update before the 03's came out. I'm sure Joe will fill us in :)

For certain, part number 200.330.01 (Rockerarm intake complete) will update all displacements from 400-650 2001-2002.

200.331.01 exhaust will update the 2001-2002 400 and
200.331.02 exhaust will update the 2001-2002 470-650

Interesting though that the 2003 parts book doesn't show the 03 rockers updating the 01 & 02 models. Perhaps newer books will show the fitment.

So the question is can the 03 rocker assemblies be used to update pre 01 models?

And where did Joe get those rockers? :)

The 200.334.02 kit is a spare parts kit that came from Germany. It was put together by the factory to upgrade 1996 through 2002 Husabergs (all but the 400s which were a different kit) to the 2003 rocker arm 'cam follower needle bearing' configuration.

This kit was not imported to the USA, and the spare parts distribution system in the USA was virtually non-existant at the time.

husabutt has all of the details correct relative to the current part numbers.

I have since purchased another 03 Intake Arm at a very good price from Dan Blum of Motoxotica.

So it looks like the 03 rockers can be used as an update all the way back to 1996 models.

Has anyone else installed the 03 rockers in their 1996-2000 Bergs?

I forgot to mention one thing about using these 03 rocker arms on pre 2001 Husabergs.

1996 through 2000 models used splash from the cam chain to feed oil to the rocker arm bushings and cam follower needle bearings. These models had a hole drilled in the top of the rocker arm to allow splash oil to enter the rocker arm to lubricate the bushings.

The 2001 through 2003 models had an oil gallery design in the engine to pressure feed oil to the rocker arm shafts to oil the bushings. These rocker arms do not have the splash oiling hole drilled into them.

So, on the 1996 through 2000 models you must drill a hole in the top of each 2003 rocker arm just like the the older arms have, the same diameter and location.

thanks for all the information . ill post my results with cost when im done with my top end rebuild ..

Is this upgrade really necessary pre ´01? I was under the impression that only the ´01-´02 suffered from weak bearings. Due to stiffer springs? I could be wrong, but a friend of mine has many hours on his ´98 400 with no such update and no problems.

Yes.

Dale Lineaweaver can best answer your question.

Here is my experience though on my 2000 501.

The conical valve spring was introduced on the 1999 models.

At 62.4 hours of operation, I replaced the OEM cam follower bearings, the intake bearing axle had worn 0.005", the exhaust axle had worn 0.003".

At another 67.9 hours of operation, I replaced the OEM cam follower bearings with Husqvarna bearings, the intake bearing axle had worn 0.012", the exhaust axle had worn 0.003".

At another 91.3 hours of operation, I replaced the OEM rocker arms and Husqvarna cam follower bearings with 2003 rocker arms, the intake bearing axle had worn 0.008", the exhaust axle had worn 0.003".

At another 99.3 hours of operation, I removed the 2003 Intake rocker arm cam follower to measure the wear on the axle. It had worn 0.004".

So, if I boil this down, the 2003 design cam follower bearing only wore 0.004" in 99.3 hours, while the 1989 design cam follower bearing wore 0.005" in 62.4 hours, and a 2nd set wore 0.012" in 67.9 hours.

You can draw your own conclusions on this limited sample!

Here is an example of a badly worn axle:

Thanks Joe!

So it´s clear that all years with conical springs really benefit from the upgrade. Although this thread is about the ´00 501, I am still curious wheather on a bang for buck basis it is necessary for my buddy to upgrade his ´98, having the old style springs. Is it common practice to upgrade pre ´99 engines?

And has Dale developed any conical springs to match his cam grinds?
