FE501E Has HI/LO Speed Forks?

The recent purchase 2002 FE501E has a set of WP forks with a single compression adjuster under each fork (per the manual) AND two smaller adjusters on each side of that adjuster. Are these HI/LO speed adjusters? If so, sweet.....

But which is which? Neither are marked, stamped, or in the stock manual. I'm getting a rough ride on small bumps and it may be the LO speed compression is cranked in too tight. Any leads on how to tell the difference???

Hi kevin
what you are descibing are Novation ss valves go to my gallery and see if they look like
that

Viking,

That's the set up. One main adjuster with two on the sides. Would you please tell me which is the HI speed and which is LO speed adjuster? BTW, like your gallery header guard, did you make that yourself?

ktmlew,

That's it! It's a four-way adjuster? Sweet.....
Thanks for taking the time to send this.
The days of taking a beating on the trail are soon over.......

ktmlew,

I hate to ask, but after reading the instructions, can I assume...
So many turns "out" are from the fully closed clockwise position, and
so many turns "in" are from the fully closed counterclockwise position?

Looks kinda confusing. Guess you will have to follow the rec settings at the bottom of the instructions and tune from there? Back when these were popular there were a bunch of guys flailing around trying to get them figured-out...

a bunch of guys flailing around
You're right, they were "flailing". Looks like I'll have to do my share of "flailing" through trial and error. At least I now have a set of instructions (thanks to you), so it will be controlled "flailing". I can amaze my riding buddies with all the adjustment possibilities, it will psyche them out for sure. Any edge will do in friendly competition, even if it is a virtual edge.

Kevin
dont let number of adjusters psyche you out, only do one adjustment at time until
you are confident in what you are doing thats where people get turned around
and then they don't know up from down, I don't what kind of riding you do if it is rocky
whoops or other here is what I remember from that vintage fork for technical trails
the very center adj. 2-3 clicks in from out, once you find what is best you rarely have adj it
the outer center 3-5 clicks in from out the faster you go the more you going to turn it in
the gold adj (low speed) 1-2 turns out from in or if you can feel the clicks 4-8 from in
you would adj this in if the front end is diving to much during a g out
you would want to adj out if the bike feels tall going into the a turn and not letting the
bike to set
the silver adj. (supple adj.) 0-˝ turn out from in you would adj in if you want little more
hold up in a g- out or out when you more compliance over rocks
there is a possibility that you have the first version of this valve it did not have detents
on the adjusters the function would remain the same, main difference would be the
center outer adj. and its sensitivity to know which one you have turn the center
outer adj in and you should feel a detent every 1/3 of a turn let me know what you think
