i have a 2001 fe470 it will not start using the kickstart no matter how long i try but if i bump start it it starts straight away and runs a bit rough on bottom end but okay rideable i have checked carb..plug this is black so it is running rich the needle is in the middle on the carb i have had it fully down to try and weaken the mixture this didn't seem to make`any difference i have checked the tappets they seem okay even though this is not easy to see..t seems to backfire through the card sometimes when you try to kick start it which would seem like timing please help as my leg is nearly worn out !!!!! i also have a fe400 and a 650 so i am used to starting these bikes..i must admit though these are the hardest bikes to start i have everhad and i have had over 45 off road bikes over 25 years do you other guys have any trouble starting these bikes ??? thanks for any help offered ..

The popping is usually caused from a rich condition. The needle and needle jet tend to wear and cause a rich condition. The float needs to be spot on as well. The rpm must be set to 1800 rpm I believe.
In order for this bike to start properly all adjustments must be spot on.
You will have to verify actual valve clearence. Make sure the decompression cable is properly adjusted. Check the air fiter for over oiling and make sure ther is no oil in the carb intake tract.
Replace that plug!!

thanks ...the carb on the fe400 i have is the same and the needle is a 35 so if i try that and it's okay i will know the needle on the origonal is worn and thats the reason it's running rich

hi again
right i have swopped the carbs from the my 400 (which starts okay) to the 470 both carbs have the same needle jets and needle sizes fitted being 272dr needle jet and k35 needle the bike will still not kick start if i bump start it. it starts as soon as the engine turns over and ticks over no problem i have checked the tappets again they seem to be okay the bike still backfires through the carb sometimes when kicked over i spoke to dave at dcr husaberg he told me to fit a 51 needle with a 272 needle jet which i'm waiting to arrive so i will try this what gets me is it starts so easly when bumped .it's better with the changed carb and seems cleaner reving on the bottom end i think i must have lost half a stone kicking this beast over !!!!

Are you adjusting the air screw? That makes quite a difference for starting, idling, and bottom end response.

The last 01 470 that I had that started really hard ended up having tuliped (pulled) intake valves. It was only discovered after I had exhausted all other possibilities.

i have set the air screw about 2 1/2 turns out from fully in do you think this is okay ?t as for the valves i havent checked them yet i really don't want to go down that road .... fingers crossed.

I think that what you are experiencing is in fact valve related. If they are not tuliped as described by Berger then they are probably out of adjustment. On my 01 470 as the valves begin needing adjustment it gets harder and harder to start. Then it will only start when cold by pull starting it. When the valves are adjusted correctly it is a very easy starter. Additionally the bike will also pop on decel when the valves are out of spec mimicking a lean pilot jet.

So if the bike ran well previously but begins to become harder and harder to kickstart and at the same time starts popping more and more on decel this tells me the valves are getting further and further out of adjustment.

hi again right i changed the plug again for second time and now it will kickstart more or less okay the new jet and needle have arrived these are needle k51 and needle jet 270dr do you think these will be okay ??? i haven't fitted these yet so i'm hoping for an improvement when i do ... with the previous two plugs one which was in it when the starting problems started and another new plug it would only bump i have checked both these plugs and they seem to spark okay it must be some sort of weak spark in therse faulty plugs .anyway i went out for a ride yesterday i stopped for a coffee when i came to restart the bike it backfired through the kickstart and broke my ankle !!!! (yes i was wearing bike boots ) can you believe it ..
