Hey

I'm wondering if any of you have any information about oil coolers for an '05 FE450e. I'm trying to decide if I should try to make one myself or if you know of anyone making these aftermarket. If you've made your own and could let me know whether the oil should go from the inside to outside of the filter or vice-versa that would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Sean

there was a company in Cali that produced one. I don't remember the name of it, but a search in the forum will get you a couple threads. If I can ask, why are you putting one on a 450?

I would bet the same reason I want one Fry............ more oil volume for longer change intervals. Do a 1000 mile week trip and what? change the oil every other day???? too much on the road. Back to back 200 mile days unsupported are not uncommon here in the desert.
I have even thought of converting the underseat fuel cell into a oil tank.......4 quarts of oil I would feel comfortable going 1k between oil changes

BTW the oil cooler was made by Joe Racer and .... well.... Ive seen one and ....... I dont have one. I was that impressed

Hey Fryguy

A lot of the riding I do is tight and slow, combined with the mud my bike often boils over. I'm just looking for a way to keep it a bit cooler. thanks for the reply.

The Joe Racer cooler looks decent although a little pricey. The positioning is a little weird too and I would prefer braided hoses. Haha, I am a little picky though.

yeah what you need sean in canada is a thermo fan not an oil cooler.
an oil cooler needs air passing around it to be effective.
i have an oil cooler myself ,but most of my riding is med-fast stuff, different situation lad.
a mate of mine has a thermo fan on his fe650 & it pulls the temp down real quick.
i'd put the money towards that.
cheers ..weed..

One day, Bobzilla, you are going to lead my sorry kiester around on one of those rides..if you'll have me. gotta try it. Unless you run a some funky scavenging pump, you can't use the upper tank as a reservior. It will wet sump your engine. But to use it as a reservior for an oil change, good idea!!!

Popup has it right. Tight going requires a fan and good oil and you'll have no issues what so ever. I've had the gas boiling many a time with hot engine, but no failures or issues.

Make sure the head is bled ( a little b 8mm bolt right above teh spark plug ). Crack this at the end of a ride, when the system is hot and pressurized, it will push the air past the threads. Also, good pump gas really helps. The compression ratio on teh 450 is huge, and regular pump gas creates a lot of heat. Some guys, myself included, mix off VP 111 50/50 for ugly rides to keep the heat factor low.

where do you do your riding?

cheers

I ride in all the PRA's along the eastern slope. mainly the ones north of the 1A highway Fallen Timber, Burnt Timber, Waiporous... A lot of the tougher riding I do is up around the Edson/Hinton area though. I bought my bike out in Brooks, where do you go mostly?

My thoughts as to the wet sump. but your right about a way to carry oil.... you could always burn it un a fire for disposal
Going to take a KTM dealer best customers on a 2 day ride 6-7 of June..your always welcome Lee

Spring and fall, I ride badlands on my ranch...in the summer we go to the Old Man and Race Horse Creek areas with the family camping. Occationally I take day rides to Mclean or Waiporous.

Are you coming out to Corner Grass? Check out the website. Great event, lots of fun.

Back to your oil cooler question, for where you ride, its probably more of a liability with teh extra hoses and such. Too many sticks etc that tear things off the bike. Sounds liek you were going away from teh idea anyway.

Also, I didn't think of it till now, but what jetting are your running? If its std, you'll have temp issues as well, as its way too lean, even for your elevation.

cheers

Can't make this trip, Bob, but I'll certainly take a raincheck. I'm going to call you one day as well....on item on my bucketlist is to ride the desert with snow. I always thought that was cool when they did bike tests and had pics of the sand roosted all over the prestine snow. A heavenly picture!!!

keep well and enjoy the ride.

Anything can help...The fan made the difference. Mounted one on my 08' FE650. Boil over stopped. Same riding conditions etc. Oddly enough, the holes to mount the fan were already there on the exchanger/radiator. A sound investment for Aprrox. $330 and 15-20minutes install time.
