Hi Gents,

I am new to this site, everything in the net points here to ask questions about bergs so here I am ... :D
I am in the process of buying a new berg (I own a KTM 640 Adventure) and I would like to ask for your input all you berg riders. I have found the following bike (pics can be seen here > http://www.car.gr/classifieds/bikes/view/1714908/ ). It's and FE450 2005 model with front plastics from a 06 model.

The translation is the following:
''The bike is very clean, with motard wheels and exhaust pipe the price is 3100 Euro. Without the motard wheels 2800 Euro and without the motard wheels and exhaust pipe 2500 Euro. For more info please call. ''

I spoke with the guy and he was quite honest, he has not changed anything on the bike engine, just oil changes every 10 hours, other than that he says that the bike doesn need or needed anything else. ...

I am new to these engines, and I am a bit scared of the 10 - 20 hours oils changes and the spares that these engines may need (costwise). Although from what I have read everywhere I want to buy this bike like mAd

Off to the questions ...

1) I would like to ask if they have any common problems that I should be checking (like the waterpump etc), reliability issues and so on.
2) Does anybody follow exactly the berg's manual as far as the check's is concerned ? I was a bit scared when I read everything ...
3) I have seen that this bike does not have a skid plate nor a radiator fan. Also a larger tank would be nice to find. How difficult is to add these on the bike ? I have searched everywhere (including this site) and I can find everything for a 2006 model and above but nothing for the '05
4) I know larger tanks are pita to find but during the years may be somebody decided making them ... Any clues ?

Many thanks everybody,
Ride safe,
D.

Hi and welcome

I'm not the best guy to give you the best advice, because my newer bike is a 02, but I don't want to leave you without one answer.
About your bike, for me, after 03 the major problems are solved (ignition and carb), this is supposed to be a racing machine, so the maintenance it's not the same as a XR. No I don't follow the intervals of maintenance that are in the manual, +\- I multiply by two. For those are for racing conditions not for a weekend ride, never had problems, but there are people that follows them.
The 05 it's not so different from the 06, the skid plates etc are the same. I never searched for big tanks because I don't need, but you can check in the owners docs here, and in the end, rallye prep., you have info about them.
If you buy it and you have any problem, I'm sure here in this forum you will find help.
Just go for it

i went from an 03 400 to an 06 450 and really with the 06 450, which is pretty much the same as the 05 it was just keep the bike on a battery tender when garaged, change the oil and filters every couple of rides and the normal maintenance and that was it. Even ran it with SM wheels for a while and that was quite entertaining.

unless your riding rocky going i wouldn't worry about the skid plate though if you do want one alot of the ktm ones will fit if you cant find a specific HB one. i ran one i'd had on a 2003 ktm 250 exc 2st and it fitted perfect.

same goes for the cooling fan unless where you are is really hot i wouldn't bother. never had my 06 boil over unlike my 09 which did once. though again the fans should be easy to source from either a husaberg or ktm dealer.

tank wise the tank thats on it is 9 litres which should be good for 70 miles. Clarke made a larger tank for the bergs which whilst not that common you should be able to find them.

Many thanks for your replies gents, I thought nobody would answer ...

NewB question. Where exactly are the docs

As far as the machine goes the friend of mine will ride it tomorrow but so far we found the following (minor in my opinion) problems.

So far so good >>
Wheels, Tyres, Brake pads, Air Filter, Carb collar, Rear suspension (no leaks etc), footpegs and brake and gear lever.

So far... not so good ...
Brake fluid needs changing (both front and rear)
The front brake feeling is not good (sponge feeling, may be due to brake pads and fluids? )
Front wheel bearings
Not good throttle return. It is sticky but may be need lubricating
Broken clutch lever and decompression lever missing ... :cuss:
Chain and sprockets
Chain guide heavily damaged. It brakes the rear wheel

May be tomorrow my good friend will take it for a ride and come back to me with some feedback ... I adore the looks of these bikes since I was a kid... ...

Again, thanks all for your time... I hope somehow in the future I contribute to the knowledge of this forum

Hi
So far everything you are finding its normal wear stuff, some people doesn't take good care of their bikes.

Most of the guys here only answer difficult and technical questions

The "owners docs" are in the main page on the top left menu.

I agree, most of those problems sound like normal maintenance issues! All bits and bobs like that are very easy to come by! (ebay)
Check the grip on the throttle side isn't rubbing on the hand guard (if it has them) and making it a stiff return! That is what mine does!
Don't be put off my rumours of unreliability, yes the bikes do like being looked after but which race bikes don't?
Oil changes are easy and cost about a tenner. I do my oil every other ride and the filter every other oil change!

Oh and lots of people take the decompression lever off anyway as it has auto decomp!
I've never pulled my lever on either of my 2 bikes and years of ownership!

If you are in the UK and need parts/spares you can't do much better than Mid West Racing or Dave Clarke Racing. Dave is normally very good for second hand stuff too!

Gents, I can proudly say that I am 50% ower at the moment of the berg  ... I will be 1oo% at the end of this month. Because the bike is so far away, the friend who first looked at the bike, will service it (small bits and bobs like oil change, chain & sprockets etc) and I will have it at the end of this month ...
I am not in the UK (unfortunately ... as I have lived there for ten years...) but I wll check both Mid West Racing and Dave Clarke Racing for parts, extras, addons etc 8O

Boy I feel like a teenager again

i have a list of stuff for you to check but i will go one at a time, the brake fluids need changing with a good .5 fluid as brake fluid absorbs water from the atmosphere (hygroscopic), the spongy front brake is a common problem and you will never bleed it out and it got nothing to do with the fluid, the way to do it is take the front caliper off remove the reservoir cap and force the brake pads backwards with a lever quickly until they stop, bubbles will appear in the res and you need to pump up the brakes again and repeat forcing the pads back about 5 times, then refit the caliper pump up and your brakes will return. this trick is used on all Husaberg and KTM from before 2000.
You can change the fluid before or after simply bleed it out until you have nearly no fluid left in the res, add your new fluid and pump the new fluid through until its flushed the system,
a trick is to put a piece of clear hose on the bleed nipple zip tie it in a circle and you can see the new and old fluid colour coming through.
ORANGEBERG

Many thanX orangeberg,

I will go through the steps that you suggested and come up with some feedback about the resultS 8)
