fe400e kick starter

Hello, I just picked up a 2000 fe400e. The bike does not run at the moment due to a bad stator and while I'm waiting for a new stator I thought I would take care of a couple other issues with the bike. One of the problems is with the kick starter. When you push it down, at about the half way point it skips and catches on the very bottom.
I pulled the clutch cover off to take a look and the kick starter shaft has some play in it and it can be pulled out a couple of centimeters. I then put the cover back on because I did not have time to go much further with it and now the kick starter is jammed and will not move.
Before I get back into this does anyone have any suggestions or recommendation's as to what to look for and what to expect? Is this a common problem? Also were can I get a good manual for this bike? Thank you!

Manual...Have you looked in the downloads section on the left. Then for additional back-up try the Owners doc.

when you next pull that baby and get the 3" gear out. look inside and a latch that clicks will be very worn on one face but can be turned over. worst of all, the inside teeth of the gear will be worn out. check the ID of the hole for the gear to sit on the needle rollers? there were two sizes: something like 21 and 22mm ID.

the reason it went wrong putting it together is because it wasn't pushed deep enough in and came undone as you fitted the cover. try and fit the cover with the bike laying on it's right.

the silver 'latch' muct also protrude 2mm to the rear. if it doesn't it will miss the sledge in the case and do what yours did. worst cases need a blob of weld on ther end. go search the doc and it may be under anything but i think upgrtade is the obvious one.

regards
