Sorry if this has been raised before - new to this forum.
Has any one got a fix for the starter motor on the 99 FE400E?
It seems to be seized/not getting any current.
When it was working, it didn't seem to have any enough power to spin the engine, and it gradually got slower to the point where it doesn't work at all!.
Anybody had the same problem, and gone through the repair process?
 
No, the battery is fine.
Its not a case of "no power", more that the starter motor wont turn anymore..like it has died a slow death.
Yes, it would seem like there is no power getting to the starter if you listened to it, but when the ignition was turned on, all the elcetrics were fine.
But the the starter motor sounded like it was struggling to turn, like it was slowly seizing, or the bushes in the stator were deteriorating.
I thought that it might be a common problem with the 99 FE400Es?
 
10,000 miles, 369 hours on my 00 501, no starter problems. Only symptom was loose battery and solenoid cables. Battery lasted 5 1/2 years.

berg400 - What voltage do you measure between the body of the starter motor and the copper connector bolt on the side of it with the starter working? Make sure you test off the bolt itself & not the wire lug or anywhere else.

If this is less than about 9V, try using a second battery with jumper leads straight onto the starter. If it works OK, chances are the problem is in the starter wiring, battery or solenoid.

Also, does the starter seem to be fighting engine compression? There seems to be a lot of discussion about the auto decompressor. As it wears the starter gets sluggish.

Note the starter in the '99 is bigger than the 2001 onwards models and should spin the smaller 4 hunnert over well. The same starter does OK in the 600 if the decomp works.
