Hi All,

Only recently joined the forum and already looking for some advice - hopefully someone will be able to offer some pearls of wisdom ...

History - Had the bike since new but it's been in the garage for the last 5 - 6yrs, anyhow got it up and running a couple of weeks ago and it's been fine (only covered maybe 30 miles) ... got it mot'ed, insured and taxed...

Problem - Come to use it today, started fine with no issues ...got a mile up the road and it's developed an engine knock...seemed to be intermittent at first but now it's there constantly ...

Toed the bike home and was just wandering whether there are any known issues that develop this quickly before I start stripping it down ???

I guess another question is can you still get spares for a bike of this vintage??

Would appriciate any help or advice offered ...

Thanks in advance guys ...

i'd start by pulling the cam cover and check the cam follower and cam bearings.

Hello Gaz

I've just rebuilt an identical motor for an American. you can get through one way or another Except for the rod. I sold the last known rod a week ago to a Swede.

see how it is but even that can be overcome!

as Ned says: cam follower bearings or a cam bearing itself collapsing. tappet nut falling off?

not much else I can think of????

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll be taking it apart this weekend so I'll let you know what I find ....

Hi Taffy / Ned,

Pulled it apart today and found that your guidance was dead on ... the inlet rocker arm baring has collapsed. Are these available in the UK, I assume they are replaceable as they are shown in the parts manual ....

My only other question is how do you remove the rocker arm itself , the screw at the end of the shaft is turning but its not unscrewing ... does the black collar inside the casing need to be held while unscrewing the screw itself?

As always thanks for your anticipated help ...

Gaz

:eek::eek:;)

you should leave the rocker bolt directly over that 'black thing' in still. that will stop it turning.

when you put it together you'll need the vertical hole to align....you'll see it!

I sell the CFBs.

the factory stopped making them a year ago.

Hi Taffy,

Had a look at your web site and was a little taken back by the price for such a small bearing, but I'm guessing these are fairly rare ...

Are the bearings you sell OE or an improved version (I know from the forum that you strive to improve where possible) as this seems to be a common fault with these bikes, would like to think that a new one would last a little longer than the original ... lol

Hello Gaz

they became unavailable OEM in the Autumn of last year. I then found a new source of them and put them up cheaper than they used to be from KTM.

as the post below says: they are cheaper.

Thanks guys - I'll be ordering tomorrow so will hopefully get the bike back together next weekend .....

Once again - thanks for all your help ...
