Gearings For 01 FE400's,My One Doesnt Like To Go That Slow,Seems To Stall Very Easy.
My Sons VOR Will Tractor Nice And Slowly,Almost Walking Pace With Out Stalling.
The Berg Wants To Go At A Running Pace,Which Is A Little Fast For The Type Of Riding We Do.
What Would You Guys Recommend. We Ride The Tight,Very Muddy Single Trail Type Stuff,Very Tight And Hilly.
Thanks In Advanced

gearing

Hi Kez,It can be difficult to recommend with any validity "gearing" to someone on another continent.Vastly different terrain dictates its own final drive gearing. Also many riders feel that in rough terrain(rocks, roots, mud) they prefer to ride in the highest gear possible and use the clutch,as this results in less wheelspin.Other riders prefer to have a "tractor" low gear to get through the rough stuff. As it is in many of the tuning areas of your machine there is really no substitute for testing. You may also find that as your skill level changes so will your requirements for gearing......just my opinion...nsman

What you need to do is find out how many teeth are on your front and rear sprockets.Once you find that out get a front 1 or 2 teeth smaller.I think stock is a 15 so you can drop down to a 13 if you have to.The rear I think stock is a 48, you can go larger up to a 52.I use a 13x48 on my FE501 and it does pretty good.I don`t know how you ride so you might have to experiment some to see witch one suites your ridding style.Hope this helps.

do you race or just green lane?

i run the equivelant of 13 x 48 but went to 14 x 50 and had the safety block under the swing arm slightly modified to help. this way the front sprocket lasts longer. you'll need an extra link in the chain BTW if you go my way.

sounds like your real problem is your carb set-up. i know that someone from here -but i can't rememebr who!- went to gary grover and said the difference was amazing.

i would try gary.

if doing it yourself i would purchase a new plug and set the bike up.

the standard PJ is a 33 and i would fit a 38 straight away. next you should set the PS so that you get the best idle and then lower the tickover back down.

try to pop little front wheel wheelies etc without the bike bogging and adjust the PS again 1/4 or 1/2 turn to get this.

your tappets need doing regularly as well-like every 4th ride or so and if they're not adjusted the bike will stall a lot.

this little lot should sort you!

Thanks Taffy.
We're Going To Be Mainly Doing Green lanes,But Would Like To Start Racing,But Dont Know Of Any Clubs Locally.
The Bike Is In Need Of A Decent Service.
What Differance Will Changing To Your Set Up With The Sprockets Make?

Kez

the bike will engine brake a lot better and you won't overrun the groove etc. but get the thing running right first-there is no zero time/money answer just TLC.

the two near you will be chiltern hills near high wycombe and the south reading MC clubs.

go to http://www.enduro.uk.com/ then go into regs and contacts etc and you'll find them there.

green lanes

Hello Taffy,You always give good advice and obviously are well informed about things in the U.K I have what may seem a strange question for you! What exactly is a green lane, you brits refer to them often, are they dirt roads or ? Do they go everywhere in britain, like a linked trail system, please enlighten me.Thanks .....nsman

here is a quick link to the blokes charged with saving our riding heritage here in the UK. http://www.trf.org.uk/

we have the same issues as you but at least we've been using these old byways for hundreds of years but we are also running out of room as our population explodes.

green lanes are basically trails. over here we only really enjoy them when it's wet, cold and miserable. and then when everything is stacked against us we 'fight the elements and make it home'. don't ask me why?!?!

cheers

Taffy

O.K. Taffy, From the web site you provided,it appears to me that green lanes are the roads that have become obsolete as the centuries passed.Instead of reclaiming the land as farmland or whatever the road "right of ways" have been maintained and used by local traffic .....have I got it....nsman....thanks

that's it mate yes. around london it's really tough to keep them as everyone starts using them as the road leading to the house they just got permission to build in what we know as 'green belt'. so you find yourself going down a byway that used to be tarmac then immediately dirt and suddenly there are 3 prestine detached 'des-res' and a shingle 'drive'. a week later they come out and scowl at you as though it's their private bloody road and as you must have heard this saying "oy get orf moy land"!!!

then in rural places like wales they wear out or 'erode' so we have seasonal restrictions being imposed (as you could see from the direct comparison photos) the ramblers or 'hikers' are very powerful and so too are the equine 'jollies' and we get chucked in with the '4x4' brigade as 'bad news'.

these boys can really ride and don't pose at all. army jackets, boots, thermals, galoshes they don't care what they look like. it's function over form all day! they like their 200 two-strokes so that when the entire bike disappears in a bog somenone will feel they have half a chance of retreiving the bloody thing!

dressed like this they look like dayglo lobsters and the wife would NOT take a shining too them if she saw them now!

but it's free and there is a lot of skill and knowledge in planning and getting around. because it's cold and wet we don't get many 'posers'.

the reason many won't ride in the summer or when the ground has hardened is because the lush green vegitation conceals 2' ruts that could badly hurt you. it's serious **** doing 25mph in 4th and wiping out in 10" of grass for no apparent reason until you stand up and see hole that some bloody tractor or landrover dug only two weeks before and would swallow a refrigerator whole!

it's a man thing doncha know!

I use 14 48 gearing has been good for tight sandy stuff and good for the mountains. And not to bad at all on the open tracks. good all rounder gearing i reckon
