Please forgive my stupidity Is the elduro the electric start enduro?

If it is, do people run it on standard jetting?

I bought one three weeks ago and it runs ok at low medium revs, ticks over fine, even starts fine (when cold) and up to around 3/4 revs and above.

Then its ewwwwwwwwww. Not nice, flat, like a misfire, and won't pull...

Looked at plug and its black like its running rich? Swapped it to an iridium one and its still the same.

I've read so much about this dellorto carb being temperamental that I dont want to mess with it myself but I suspect that the jets etc have been changed at some point in the past...

Needle jet was a dr272? (i think), needle had a 5 (maybe 35) on it but i couldnt read it - was on 3rd notch from top. I dropped it one higher to 2nd notch cos i thought it was running rich but made no difference other than popping more on overrun. Couldnt read the pilot jet but as its ticking over and starts fine hopefully this is ok and airscrew is 1-1/2ish, as it should be.

Any clues if it would be the needle jet or main jet. Couldnt read the main jet size? Other thought was fuel not actuially getting to the carb properly?

Am getting really husa'd off. I appreciate that its a thorobread but I bought it to ride, not take apart every weekend which is what i'm doin at at the moment.

Ever Hopeful.....

Chris

Welcome Chris,
Giving your symptoms I would guess that the needle and needle jet are worn. This is common on older bikes. I would recommend a thorough cleaning and inspection of the carb. You may consider replacing the needle and needle jet as well as verifying float level. It would also be advisable to check your valve adjustment as well.

Standard settings for a 1998 Fe 400 Elduro are as follows:

Main jet 190
Needle Jet DR270
Needle K35
Needle clip #2
Pilot jet 52
Start jet 45

I agree with Berger 100% as the needle and needle jet are high wear items.

And yes the Elduro is the electric start enduro model.

Thanks guys for your speedy reponse

My confusion is caused partly by the Husa manuals and some element of logic (?!)

I can't understand why the elec start would have different jetting from the kickstart when its the same engine is the first thing? (or isn't it the same engine?)

The 1999 owners manual says FE400 needle jet DR266, main 195, needle K35 for both enduro and elduro (which logically makes sense?) (but DR 270/195/K51 for the US version elduro)

The 1999 workshop manual says FE400 enduro needle jet DR272 main 210 needle K35 but elduro needle jet DR266/195 main/K35 needle as per the owners manual

Hopefully now you can see why I'm asking What I think should be a stupid question - all I want is for it to run right so I can have some fun.

Am taking it to a shop to get valve clearances, timing, camchain etc checked next anyway, just for peace of mind and check float level - once they've done that may have a go at swapping out the needle and jet cos I'm running out of ideas...

Any other thoughts - what about this vacuum controlled fuel pump thing - 'cos all the petrols on the wrong side of the frame spine?

Chris,

I own a 99 Fe 501E.

The US settings might have to do with emmission standards they needed to meet. All bikes in the US are normally set real lean.

If you fill the tank really full, you can take the Mikuni vacuum pump out of the equation as it only supplies fuel after a certain point. You have a vacuum hose attached to the intake for the pump, make sure that the bike does not suck air due to bad hoses etc.

Good luck,

Hakan
