FE 570 smells of oil...!!!

Hi,

I have a FE 570 2011 european model, bought it new 7 months ago, it has 1500 kms and around 45 hours.
The only modifcation is an slip-on Akrapovic, that I installed 2 months ago.

I have changed the oil 4 times, the 1st time just after one hour of "live", then every 15 hours. Always with the oil filter.

The other day I was riding on it and a friend who was behind me told me that my bike was smelling of oil, but no signal of smoke.
I stopped, and at idle didn´t smell, putting my nose close to the exhaust and accelerating, but no smell and no smoke.
We continued riding and again told me about the smell, we changed bikes, so I was behind him and I was able to smell the oil, but was an smell of pure oil, like when you open a new oil can, not like burning oil.

I have been cheking the oil level very often and is always in the correct level.

I don´t see any oil leak, and don´t see any smoke. Smells only when is moving. With the bike stopped and only accelerating I don´t smell it.

Now I´m really worried about it.

Does anybody have an idea of what is going on?

Thanks.

Carlos.

No, it is from my bike.
The next day I rode with other guy and we smell it from my bike. This is very clear to me, no doubts.

Have you checked to see if the bike is throwing oil out of the breather into the airbox? In the absence of any external oil leaks this is the only place I can think of where you would see oil outside of the engine.

I have been cleaning the air filter very often, always the airbox was without any oil, except one day that there was a small quantity of oil, I think it was beacuse I fell down and the bike fell down up side down.
I cleaned it up, and never again oil on the airbox.
I have checked out the tube of the breather and looks nice, no scratch. The only thing is that the cylinder head black cap was dirty where the breather tube connects, like rest of oil mixed with dust, but small quantity, and the tube was a bit higher on its location from fully sealed, but only 1 mm. Still was safely connected to the cap.
Is this rest of dusty oil on the cap normal?
As I said, it was small quantity, and don´t think the smell comes from there.
But I really hope it comes from there, that will mean no big problem.
I cleaned it up but didn´t have the opotunity to ride the bike again.

Is normal to have rest of oil in the airbox after the bike has been lie down?

If you have a build up of oil/dirt residue around the breather pipe connection to the cyl head cover the joint cannot be air/oil tight. A hoseclamp should fix that but, as you say, it's unlikely a leak that small would cause the smell. If the bike has been on it's side/upside down it is possible for oil to run down the breather pipe and into the airbox instead of draining back into the sump.
If you have no leaks you can find, the airbox is clear, it's not burning oil and the oil level is stable I wouldn't worry about it.

pegscraper, sorry about my english, but I don´t understand what do you mean with "the joint cannot de air/oil tight"
There was no hoseclamp on the pipe, should be one there?

I know if the oil level is stable should mean no big problem, but I don´t like my bike is smelling of oil, and it is a new bike, it shouldn´t smell of no oil...!

Is it possible you spilled oil on the motor or exhaust when doing the oilchange? This would definately cause a burning oil smell, and no visible blue smoke or drop in oil level, but would go away after a bit of riding.

I thought about it as well, but I don´t remember to spilled out any oil, but can be and I didn´t realise, but I normally clean the bike after every run, and the day my friend told me about the smell I was make the last oil change like 3 or 4 rides ago, so means at least I have cleaned the bike at least 3 times.
I will try to clean it very carefully and try again.

Thanks for the replies.

Un saludo.

Hey Buxo, Just a thought, Have you been riding behind any two smokes lately? :)

Some times when you spill a little oil on the engine or exhaust during maintainence it smells.. also, new bikes smell of oil, plastic, and gaskets which heat up and make them smell when they get hot this last for a few weeks

The breather pipe is where the blow by gasses escape, I have smelt oil when riding in hot still conditions when the bike is hot. what type of oil do you run ? I noticed it more with motul 5100

I know you said earlier that you check the oil level................

However, I would just point out, that if the oil level is too high, it will, of many things, get past the scraper. So, as a reminder, consult your owners manual and set the oil level according to the picture in the book. If there is too much oil in it it will do all kinds of funny things.

I have run Motul 5100 15W-50 exclusively for the last 15 years b/c of what I see in the motor when it get's torn down. I have never smelled any oil myself while riding.

However, the last time I was out, my buddy said he could catch a wiff every once and a while. I checked how much oil was coming out when I drained it, as compared to how much I put in, and the difference was so tiny it wasn't worth worrying about.

So, I would suggest to alleviate your worries, check how much oil comes out when you do an oil change, it's a pain, but, you will know for sure how much it is consuming if any.

The only other comment I would make is that for me, 15 hours is a bit long between oil changes, but, you are riding on the street. I am a firm believer in changing oil regularly, it should never come out black. And I'm also a big believe in the Scott's Stainless oil filters, no other brand as they use inferior epoxy. They flow more oil, both cold and hot, which is what is really important, and I only have to clean it every 8 oil changes.

It can be rest of oil when I changed it, but I have cleaned the bike a least 4 times since then.

The bike is new, but has already 1500kms and 45 hours, so it is not brand new anymore regarding plastics or gaskets, and the rides from 0 hours did not smell.

I use Bardahl XTC 10W50.

I have putted two marks with a marker on the small window in the correct space where the oil should be according the manual, I always put the oil almost on the highest level, but not even touching it, so never left higher level.

The next time I will check the quantity of drained oil.
Why you said I ride only on the street? I´m doing Enduro with it, mountain riding only, not road or street.

According to the manual the oil should be changed every 15 hours, and according to my dealer, if I don´t make any race, can be made every 20 h, but I always did it every 15 hours.

I don´t think we have this kind of Stainless oil filters here in Spain, but I will check.

As I said, I did not try the bike yet since I cleaned up the cyl head cover and "adjusted" the breather tube.
After tomorrow I will clean it again just if some oil has spilled out, and try it.
The bike smells only to the person who is rinding behind me, I never smell anything driving it.

Thanks to all of you for the replies.

Regards.

Carlos.

Finally I rode the bike and no smell anymore.
I think it was the rest of oil coming from the breather pipe beacuse was a bit separeted from the cylinder cup. I cleaned it up and no leak or smell anymore.

Cheers.
