Got a 02 KTM 520, and thinking bout updating to a FE 550 or stay with the KTM 525.

yeah never thought bout the 650 but havnt heard much about them. eg weight difference, fuel consumptiom . etc

I had an '02 520SX. I put in the six speed and did all the desert mods. It was a really good performing bike. When I got a great deal on a leftover '05 FE650e I kept the 520 because I thought it would be better in the technical stuff due to it's lighter weight. The 650 feels just as light with e-start and has WAY more power and a better transmission with wider gearing. The 550 is supposed to be even quicker! The Berg is more stable and I prefer it's handling. The only thing I liked better about the KTM was the suspension, but that was after **** Wilk did his magic on it. I sold my 520 right after purchasing my Berg and don't miss it at all.
I rode the KTM 525 and then I bought my FE550. The 525 felt a lot bigger and heavier and had a lot more flywheel. The Berg handling takes a little getting used to but then you find yourself flying over stuff that you used to slow down for. The 550 power is amazing. It will pull all the way down to idle and flat hauls *** when you want to.
I have to agree with BB. My buddy has a 525 and I hate it. I dont even want to trade bikes with him for any distance.
Before riding a 550, I assumed that the Berg would be the same type of pig that the 525 is. I was dead wrong. The 550 is a nimble bike and the motor is to die for.

I have both and agree that the 550 is the best multipurpose engine ever made by a good margin.
My bikes are the Moto versions with six speeds and **** Racing on each.(WORCS set up) The Berg is just more fun to ride in most areas. I give the nod to the 525 on a Moto track only.
The valves are holding longer than the KTM if you can believe that?
At high speed the Berg seems more stable to me and stays planted in the rear.
The 550 has more grunt and a few more horse it seems. I have ridden a 525 with a 540 kit and that seems to be a dead match for comparison sake.

don't know about comparing a 525 powerwise to a berg, but my son has an 05 525 exc, and my riding buddy has an 07. the 05 with 3 gals of fuel on board weighs 285, the 07 with 3 gals, weighs 260 :doubt:. (the blackberg with 2 gals came in at 250). this is using the bathroom scale calibrated by the nbs (ned's bureau of standards)

well off to the farm goes my 520 as a paddock plough, hopefully will give my KTM mates something to chew about when i decide which berg model to get
