Hi there I'm in Brisbane Australia and a new owner of a 08 Fe 550 and absolutely love it after only 2 hrs of riding. It had a top end rebuild and re sleeved about 1500 ks ago and has had all suspension rebuilt and rechromed new swing arm bearings and electrics all gone through . Its a very tidy and extremely well maintained bike but it's got 17thousand KMs on the bottom end and although it feels and sounds fine and as far as I and the local bike mechanic can tell and shows no signs of a problem .The previous owner did say it will need doing in the next 5 thousand KMs I did take that into account and have kept a couple grand (AU) a side . I'm looking for advice in this department and would welcome any referrals to a mechanic in Brisbane thanks...

I'd leave it alone. I left my 400 alone twice and both times it suddenly started smoking one day. so I rebuilt it once and the other time I rebuilt it in 3 hours and still caught the ferry to the Isle of Man!!!

check that you have clickers on the cam chain tensioner left by removing the tensioner spring and then removing the mechanism. I'd put

softer valve springs in the head and look at tuliped inlets.
stronger auto decomp spring on the cam
starter repair kit
jetting kit

ride it.

when they are run in there's only the worn piston to wait for and that will let you know with smoke.

easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy!

Thanks again taffy so you are saying that if the top end is done
The bottom should be fine for awhile ? And will start to smoke when ready . So to me that means wait for the top to go again and do a full rebuild ( top and bottom) at the same time? And to tell you the truth I'm not really giving it any high load or revs yet and probably won't for awhile .

PS the guy I bought it from gave me the name of a Austrian guy who upon further research looks like he was a team mechanic for Ducati for a spell . He loves working on Berg's and apparently knows the bike and won't be to happy that he wasn't told it was up for sale . The Hound bought his 06 450 about 5 months ago ...

yes, that is the top and bottom of it. Not sure about the Austrian mechanic but there is a guy dealing in some spares for therm from down that way?
