FE 400 03 - serious cold start issue

Hi all you freaks,

few weeks ago I bought HSB FE 400 (2003).
After many machines I've owned, finally, I found the right one which absolutely fits me and I want to keep FE for a long time :D.

Unfortunately I am facing a serious issue with cold start (two weeks before my planned trip to Romanian mountains ).

First symptoms I observed when I started FE after 3 or 4 days ride-off.
Doesn´t matter on kicker or electric starter, the engine started up after few tries, not on the first spark.
Time I have to spend with start up of engine really depend on how many days the engine is not running.
When the engine was warmed well then starts immediately and unhesitatingly.

Once I left berg 10 days without move, I cannot start the engine no matter how much I try.
I suspected spark plug which was wet, but giving sparks. However, I changed spark by new one – start up without success.
I recharged battery – start up without success.
I checked and cleaned carburetor - start up without success.
I checked cables – start up without success.

Please, if anyone skilled here with a time to write me an opinion, it really helps me.

by the way

by the way, I am really happy to join this useful forum. A lot of good information there. Especially cold start only by "kicker", news for me. :what:

the typical problems with a dellorto carb are that they have a very rich choke system and can flood easily. making sure the pilot jet is clean by passing a thin strand of wire thru is always a good idea. also the needle and the needle jet wear each other out, as evidenced by looking at the needle and seeing a wear groove toward the top. replacement is the solution.
it would also be good to know the resistance values of the red-green, red-black leads of the stator, since the sem ignitions are suspect.

solved

Thanks to everyone - problem solved. I'll explain it later. Now I enjoy the beer as a reward for success :D. Lovely sound of FE again.

durn kaliforny hippies!

I have been looking at Flagstaff, Sedona, Prescott and Cottonwood as a potential place to retire someday.

Being a quasi wannabe raw foodist / frutarian I think that I would probably fit in best in Sedona. Could possibly be your neighbor. If you smell smoke its just burning incense.

have a look at my facebook page for some videos on the correct ignition timing.

the carb is the other place to get right as Ned says.

Hi guys,
all this "issue" was just my stupidity and my thinking was little bit influenced by often discussed problem with ignition. Simply, I did many mistakes..

-----------------------------------------------------
I thought that choke is automatic but it isn´t .
Choke switch was very well hidden behind the fuel tank so I didn´t use choke in the first tries.

Cold start with electric starter without success - flooded spark. I´ll not use ES when cold anymore.

I changed a spark plug and try kick start with decompressor without success - flooded spark. Thought that decompressor is there to help owner to kick it easily. Practically (if I heard well) is used in special cases and in fact impoverishing mixture of fuel and air.

I tried it without decompressor with choke on .. started up on the first spark. Lovely feeling ;).

Now I know well how to handle with my Berg. Every motorcycle is really specific, differently set and have own soul :).

Thanks to everyone for your time and wish you a nice day !!!
