FE 390 and MT43 Will it fit?

If you ride an FE390 and have experience with a Pirelli MT43 DOT rear I want to hear from you.

I have a stock 13:52 sprocket setup and will be installing a new chain and sprockets soon. I want to try the MT43 Dot Trials on the rear. I have heard a lotta good stuff about this tire (and have ridden it on a friends KTM - loved it). I'm currently running a 110/100 18 rear (Maxxis Desert - hate the thing in wet gnarly trails).

But I've heard the odd rumour that it doesn't fit the FE390/450/570 bikes, causing mudguard rubbing etc.., stones building up etc... I don't want any part of that though, so let her rip with your experiences please.

Thanks Paul.

Thanks tourist. Will do. Still looking for more contributions....anyone else?

I've got about 1k miles on an MT43 on my 570. Running tubliss now with no issues. I don't see myself switching away from the mt43. Not so great for backing it in, it just grips, grips, grips.

I have ~2500mi on my MT43 and need to replace it.

It will or won't fit depending on your gearing.

It would NOT fit for me with a 14x50 gearing. I had to go to 15x50 (since i had them) to fit it. 14x49 or 14x51 would have worked. Sucks that the KTM swinger is so lacking in adjustment range.

Tip: The stock mud guard sucks, as it flaps too much. The Cycra one is a stiffer plastic and fits and works great. I went thru 2 OEMs in quick order. I think bike speed and tire placement/height play a key role.

I have run the MT43. I found that a good stiff tire like the Sedona 907 or 887, Maxxis Desert IT, Dunlop AT81H grips 95% as well when used with TUbliss and can be run flat for extended periods of time.

Even if you stick with the MT43, get TUbliss. I rode a flat MT43 for 15mi on a tube it was a horrible experience. I have rode a flat Michelin Trial X Light for 20+mi and only had to slow down for corners with Tubliss in it.

I posted a detailed thread with my findings here:

Hi Rensho, I've got 12:42 gearing...probably about 116 links. Wonder if that would fit...The other tire I'm hearing a lot of good reviews of is the new Mountain Hybrid by Motoz. Wonder if that would fit better...?

I do not know the \70\° bikes...

You will need a chain/sprocket combo that will locate the axle rearward in the swingarm.
Research others combos, and come up with the gearing that is the right ratio for where you ride, AND positions it near the back.
Will probably rub if the axle is in the exact middle.
Iirc, I had about 1/2" or 13mm between the axle and the back of the swingarm on my 2005.

It's a pretty tall tire. Nearly as tall as a 21" front.

Here with a 90/90 pirelli scorpion pro front.

I have an as yet unmounted Mountain Hybrid but plan to put it on my CRF450x rally bike. I will try to compare it to an MT43 and post pics or maybe it will end up on the 570. My guess is that it is taller than an MT43.

I don't want to make a guess at your expense. I only wrote what I experienced. I was bummed that my 14x50 would not work in the swinger, regardless of how many links in chain and how the axle blocks were pointed.

Thanks Cheif: I just replaced my chain and sprockets and the combo is forward of centre on the swing arm which means the MT43 aint gonna fit and, if you are right and the Motoz MH is even larger, then it too is a bust. let me know what you find tho, I'd like to give the Motoz a try if at all possible.

Cheers Paul

My axle blocks are pointed forward, and I'm nearly half way out. Not sure what that means though. Sounds from others though that you need to be nearly all the way out to use the MT43. Thanks for the info though.
