Hi Taff,

Maaaate. It seems like its warm beer time. I'm a believer. If it wasn't for your assistance I wouldn't have the perfect running 501 I now do.

You are the man as far as I'm concerned.

i also have dales kit husabutt. my tale about the white plug at the MGP is somewhere in the archives of UHE. it's well worth reading because it represented a season of heartbreak and lost money.

what i learnt the hard way i pass on in a one sentance post on UHE.

i'm tired of saying it. it seems the only thing people believe is either from dale or basically don't bother.

i've been here three years and i don't think i've passed on one bit of info that i can say has stuck! it's just IMPOSSIBLE!

how many times have i said "split the pipe and look down the middle".

answer this for me-but not here; in your head or PMing me will do. what MJ did dale give you?
what MJ are people trying to fit to their 04/05 550's?

now you tell me which one you believe now! it's dale isn't it!

but before you got the kit and i put up the post 'somethings wrong here' on that 550 thread, when i said that, what were you thinking? smelly stuff from mr lloyd again? i think so :D :D

they're getting white plugs with 180 MJs!!!!

what else can i say anymore. it's enough to make you weep!

ma lord the defence rests it's case

Taffy,
Did you ever consider just changing your name to Dale? It may make life easier on you :D

Plug Color

For the record:

I personally do not use plug color as a "state of tune" Barometer. I adjust for optimum performance and / or economy then choose a spark plug based on the thermal requirements.

Tuning is subjective therefore one must keep an open mind.

I try to give the end user what it is they are looking for as opposed to altering their perspective. Such is particularly important regarding that of suspension tuning.

I as Taffy do indeed look to the exhaust and / or piston crown, however, only for confirmation.

Respectfully,

A few years ago our local club decided to enlist the services of the then reining Canadian harescramble and enduro champion(Allan Lachappelle) to run a off-road riding school. At the end of a very rewarding day of instruction for many of our troops he spent an hour or so showing how to properly do certain adjustments and maintenance on their bikes. You could see the burning question on many of the lips as he concluded his speel.Any questions he asked,in a flood it all came out."what jetting should I be using Allan" they all chimed.Allan, cool as could be, says "I don't know anything about jetting, I just run what comes in the bike".At that moment he turns and walks away, looks at me with a little grin.I think Allan is a very smart man!.....nsman

He quite possibly could simply have been telling the truth. Albeit rare, It does still happen. :D

Kind Regards,

I believe that he had learned that once started, the topic of jetting never reaches a conclusion. He just did not want to feel the frustration that our man Taffy so openly describes. But ....I think you know that  ....nsman

Hi Nsman,
The subject need not be so controversial.
In my humble opinion engine tuning is 80% physics and 20% art.
Theory of operation is no secret and with regard to art I simply state it takes many years to master.

As I mentioned earlier "Tuning" in general is quite subjective and what works well for one may not be particularly well suited for another.

Case in point example:
I set up a particular suspension to what is reported to be good and proven specifications. The racer states that the front end is pushing. Do I tell him he is wrong and to change his riding style because said settings worked for so and so? Absolutely not! I make changes to accommodate his needs.

Respectfully,
Dale

Dale,
It may be true that the subject does not need to be so controversial, but the fact is that for many it is.Far too many are just interested in the final answer and not willing to try to understand the basic theory that would support an educated action.Jetting is a subject that is difficult in which to reach a general consensus .Just for fun start at the beginning of this thread and read.....nsman

I seemed to have missed your point regarding the thread review. :?

Perhaps the moral is as my friend and suspension mentor Paul Thede once stated "The best you have ridden is the best you know"

Always a pleasure Nsman.

Sincerely,
Dale

to me it's not whether i'm within a clip or two or a needle code or one. it's like "can people suspend their ideas and take a new one that is possibly even diametrically opposed to their previous/original view?"

i don't see this profound change in people.

so plug colour it is then!

now where is that 180MJ lemme at it!

Taffy

Hi Taffy,
My grandmother (rest her soul) was born and raised in the the UK.
It is said I favor her, hence my appreciation of the English.

Best Regards,
Dale

During Christmas we would soak our plum pudding in brandy sauce then light it on fire :D

i'm about to test a 148/145/142MJ and resultant needle move. also a 41mm carb blagged from scoot so that'll be done back-to-back against the 39 of mine. i'll also be testing another lineweaver needle with a fatter straight now that means larger to you yanks so remeber the idea is that it runs leaner at idle.

at present i get a spit back every blue moon and she 8-strokes mildly. i think this is because the bike is now officially a "highly strung fille"!!

so my first lineweaver needle will be available to anyone in europe who wants one. the resultant improvement is well recorded on this very thread.

Taffy

the bike now runs a 145MJ on the original MX pipe. i have had a tailpipe to test for 4-months and only just got around to it today.

i had a lag in the power in 3rd and 4th most noticeably and it was at low revs. it felt like the ignition was switched to low-but it wasn't.

the open tailpipe sorted this.

i have also tried a 158MAJ which i think gave me a few extra revs in top but i was hanging on to the bike fer grim death so that'll have to be a dyno job that one!

i'm also holding scoots 41mm carb ready for back-to-back testing!

let ya know!

Taffy

measured the fuel used on sunday this evening. get this. in 3 hours and 10 minutes of racing i used 7 litres. when i first got my husey i was getting through 9 litres in two hours.

anyone who can find old racing posts will note the occasional mention of HPTF (hours per tank full) and it has gradually crept up and up. i said that it was 3-hours to a tank not so long ago.

on these figures i would get 4.05 hours out of a tank now.

regards

Taffy
