RE: Older Bike Parts Interchange

Sorry Bruce no go there, prior to 2000 the stators were mounted to the case, not the cover. However I would suggest getting your stator rewound by Sparks. If you need a flywheel send me a PM I think I have a spare one. If you don't want to wait to get your stator rewound check with Dan at Motoxotica he was stocking some he'll want yours for a core. Also be very careful on that case welding. It is immperative that the case be ABSOLUTELY clean of all oil and contaminants. The cases should also be bolted together before welding from the outside (warpage problem otherwise) and weld on the inside too, just can't get that case hot! Good luck

*UPDATE* I may be picking up an '05 FE550E. :D I won't know for sure for a few weeks. Until then, all work has ceased on the 470.

Well, the 550 deal didn't work out so back to the 470. I'm gonna go ahead and send Sparks my stator for the rewind. He looked at the pic of my flywheel and said as long as the magnets aren't coming loose (they aren't) it's probably ok. So, once I get the stator back, I'm going to at least see if I can here it run, and then pull it apart for the renewal process.

Sorry the 550 deal didn't work out. :(
I hope going thru this 470 isn't gonna cost you more than it's worth. It sounds like you're a smart fella and have an idea of what you might be getting into. It may very well end up being a fantastic bike for you.

OK. I bought a used Sparks rewound stator from a member here that came off an '02 FE400. Installed it and still no spark. :(
Is there any way to check the CDI/coil assembly? I did a quick check of the doc but didn't see any info regarding any pass/fail tests. Do all the wires have to be connected to the kill switch and the Hi/Low ignition curve switch in order for it to spark? I didn't have them connected because I wasn't sure exactly where they went since the color coding seems to be off. Thanks guys.
Man, I really wanna here this thing run.

you really need to swop parts on and off the bike. i now do a coil (ignition module) exchange but proving that it's the coil is a *******.

Thanks Taffy, that's kinda what I figured. I work at an auto and marine repair shop and when chasing ignition woes on later model outboards, they seem to give specs on everything except the cdi unit.

Logjump, thanks for the vote of confidence. :)

Brucifer,

Out of curiosity, when you were checking the spark and all, did you do that w/ the plug cap on and grounding out a plug, or w/ the cap off? Reason I ask is, the caps can go bad. If you haven't tried already, pull the cap off and see if you can get a spark to jump to the motor etc...

ck what kzoo says, but also connect the wires from the hi/lo start switch. switch blue/yel to harness blue/ white. orange to red/ white. blue to gray. black to brown.
and doublecheck the rest of the wiring

Kzoo-
OK, tried that- nothing.

Ned- Here's a couple pics of the wiring.
First one is of the connector from the Hi/Low/Start switch. As you can see, two aren't used, I would assume for the e-start.
The next one is of the three wires coming from the cdi, and the Hi/Low and kill switches.
So what goes where? lol
I did find the blue wire coming from the switch is almost cut in half on the bars from contacting something.

Obviously the brown one with the spade goes to ground, so that leaves the grey from the Hi/Low and the black from the kill switch. But there's three coming from the cdi....

ok, i was under the impression it was a fc with the starter removed. a non starter model don't worry about the hi lo. what you have done in the top pic is right. the brown will go to ground, and the blue will go to the coil gray. if you don't connect the blue/gray, the switch will be disabled in high, which is what you will prolly want to use all the time anyway. the red green black from the stator will match up with the coil rgb. white at the coil is not used, black is grounded. your lower pic is hard to see the colors (cataracts must be acting up)

WOOOHOOO!! IT LIVES! The FC470 Bummer roared to life! :D
I'd like to thank kzoo for the stator and extra flywheel. And a huge thanks to ned37 for the coil assembly. He offered to, and did, send me one of his spare coils on his dime WITHOUT any money up front from me whatsoever. He told me if it fixed my problem we could talk about a price. What a friggin' great guy...

Okay, I didn't run it very long as the bottom end sounded like a box of rocks. I took off in first and it kinda felt like something was binding up in the transmission, then it suddenly quit, like it bound up. Clicked it back into nuetral and fired it back up (one kick) and again took off in first and quickly shifted to second and third, looped around the yard and went back to the garage and shut 'er down. Decided to start it again just to see if it would, and again, one kick. Sweet.

Well, I wanted to here it run before the big tear down and so I have. I'm looking forward to getting this poor neglected racebike back to its former glory.
So Ned, about that coil.... :p

Good news all round there apart from one thing........... during a previous rebuild someone seems to have left some printer paper wrapped around your engine!

Surely a fire hazard?
