FC 600 at high altitude

Hi all,

I just took my "new" FC600 (2000) out for the first time. Rode between 9500' to 13,000" for several hours and had none of the same "richness" symptoms as with my 400 VOR.... Is that typical for bigger-bore thumpers..? Any proven re-jet specs for this elevation??

Also, I noticed a huge difference between the "lo" and "hi" ignition set-up. How does that correlete to high altitude? My VOR has nothing like that as an option.

Ok. I noticed the plug was totally black so I dropped the needle to 1# position and went down to 172# MJ. Anyone think this is too lean?

For elevation in excess of 8K feet and all else remaining equal you will likely be well rich of optimum performance in most every operating range.

Not one in favor of generic optimums regarding engine state of tune may I suggest you let perfomance be the true measurement of proper A/F ratio.

I suggest you go smaller everywhere until performance no longer improves.

Hope this helps.

Dale,

Thank you for our answer. I was just afraid of going TOO lean; I do not want to break anything. According to KTM jetting chart, it shows 84% of stock 195# MJ to be as low as 164 around 10,000'. I have several smaller jets from my VOR down to 150.

Yesterday the bike was first difficult to start, didn't run well, until it warmed up it felt really good. It ran fine up to 13,000'.

Hi Endrofinn,
With low speed stock settings the fact your bike runs at all below half throttle above 10K feet remains a mystery to me. :D

When possible post your current settings including:
Carburetor Model
Pilot Jet
Needle Jet
Main Jet
Float Level
Slide #
Pilot Air Bleed (when applicable)
Main Air Bleed (when applicable)
Starting Jet
Idle RPM
Pilot Mixture Screw Setting

List any engine modifications and type of fuel being used.

Best Regards,
Dale

When possible post your current settings including:
Carburetor Model DELLORTO PHM 40
Pilot Jet 33
Needle Jet ? (STOCK I GUESS)
Main Jet 172 (WAS 195)
Float Level ? (STOCK I GUESS)

Main Air Bleed (when applicable)
Starting Jet 45

List any engine modifications and type of fuel being used. NO MODS. 91 UNLEADED

I also dropped the needle to top (#1) position. It looks like everything was in the stock settings according to the manual, except the the needle (K51) was in # 2 postion from the top
