FC 501 Question

Hello,
I'm new to this board. I have a chance to buy a '99 FE 501in great running and overall condition. Just wondering what is a fair price to pay. It's set up for enduro but also includes all the stuff to convert it to motocross.

I ride a '05 XR650R and wonder what the significant differences between it and the FE 501 will be for trail riding in the mountains of Colorado or normal street driving?

Thanks,
John

Re: FE 501 Question

Hi

What is the difference between a trail bike and a race bike ??
Or a truck and a car ??

There you have it

Re: FE 501 Question

Umm...okay, that was sort of helpful. I've never ridden anything but my XR650R so I don't have a clue what the Husaberg would be like...except all out on street or fireroads I'm certain the XR would smoke the snot out of the 501.

Re: FE 501 Question

BTW - last night I confirmed the bike is a FC model...not an FE - FWIW. Let's forget about the XR650R to FC 501 comparison. If I end up buying the 501 I will know soon enough.

All I really need to know is, how much is too much to pay for this bike set up as an eduro and with all the extra stuff to convert it back to motocross? Anyone know what the fair market price should be?

Your certain but never ridden it? that seems like a bold statement :? I guess i cant say i am certain since i havnt ridden the newer xr650r's but i will certainly assume you are wrong

Anyways i have seen them priced 1200.00us-2500us the high priced ones sit around a while it seems but all depends on condition and hours. usually a non electric start would also be less.

Hi

To be a complete FE you would need to change the gear box, try ebay you will find, I might have one some time soon, still don't know.

The suspension setings should be different and the cam.

Yes ZAGA, I am certain :cuss: and, of course, bull headed  Thanks for the info!! The dealer's asking $2500 and it's the owners personal bike...I know it was well maintained but I was guessing the asking price might be a little high. I'm going to see if he'll go a little lower. I really like the light weight of the 501 and I believe it may handle the harder trails I ride better being some 50 lbs lighter...we'll see.

As Zaga stated, the gearing is very different between FE and FC 501. I have a FE 99 and a FC 2000, so old and new frames with basically the same enine.
MY 99 FE is dual sported and I have yet to have anyone on an XR or a 450 X bike have enough power or balls to stay up with me on high dessert / 7000 feet mountain fire roads once we cranked it up, the bike rocks at high speed. Maybe it has something to do with being an ex-road racer and used to sliding two wheels on asphalt as well.

The 2000 FC is geared a lot lower, but I would not go through the expense of changing gear boxes if you have the 6 speed FC motor. (they sold both a 4 and a 6 speed in those days) I would consider a rear wheel change to 18" from the 19" as it really changes the feeling of the bike, but this you could wait and make decision on.

I don't think that he will get over 2K for that bike, even in good shape

Okay, the 501 is getting more intriguing to me…if it can outrun my XR650R then I definitely want to look more into this bike. Yeah, it’s an FC but it also has the 6-speed and the rear wheel is an 18".

Being geared lower I understand it may not perform on the top end like the FE but, the rocky mountain trails I ride, the lower gearing should help. Thanks for the reply Hakan!

PS - not sure I'd have the balls to take on an ex-road racer either 8O  Besides, I'm 6'5", 250lbs and a galoot

Hi

For me, the problem with the FC gearbox its not that its lower, because you can change that with the sprocket, the problem is if you have very technical trails, the 1st gear will be too long and if you have a big rear sprocket the 6st will be a bit short and it will be very agressive some times.

It will depend on the type of terrain, I have that problem with one FX of a friend.

On FC and FX you have the first 3 gears longer and the last 3 shorter, on the FE its the oposite.

If you check ebay you will find them cheap, the question is if you can change them or need some one to do it.

The cam its easy to change, you should be able to do it, and it can also make a difference.

Once again it all depends on the type of terrain you usulay ride.

Last, a good maintained husaberg, for me, will worth a few dolars more, because you will save them.

ZAGA, thanks again for your help. The owner told me is was converted to FE...I will check to see if the gearbox and cam were changed as well. Probably not...but???
