Faulty coil and stator? 02 Fe501

Hi all, seems a usual story - get home from a ride, wash the bike and air the stator, a couple of weeks later you go to start it and nothing (no spark). Having had this bike from new I had accumulated a few spares including a spare coil and rewound stator so I was cofident I would find the problem easilly.
The stator (original replacement) is going open cct (ohms range 6K-20K) so I fitted The rewound one I had but still no spark, worth noting this rewound stator only has 2K ohms but it did work albeit kick start only. So then I fitted the spare coil which is old but was working when I took it off three years ago and still no spark. I am sure of all the connections and earths.
I still suspect the coil but have some unknowns that hopefully the knowledgeable amongst us might be able to answer:
Could the defective stator have damaged the coil?
I probably connected the spare coil to the defective stator whilst faultfinding, could this have damaged the spare coil too?
Could the spare coil have gone bad from just sitting around?
Should I expect the rewound stator to work properly with 2K ohms or were all the planets aligned when I was using it? (will it work with Taffy's rebuilt coil?)

Thanks fellas for your replies, I put the bike back together for another day and then decided to give her a kick just for the hell of it, yep she fired right up. Took it apart and checked for a spark again but there wasn't one, I'm happy the bike is going but I thought the Starship Enterprise was the only vessel that could defy the laws of physics, I did read that the spark can be hard to see but surely not that hard, on with the motocross boot and some really good kicks revealed the spark but not every kick. Lesson learnt, kicking the motor over less than 100% even with the plug out won't cut it for troubleshootting.
