Fan kit install question

Hi,

Have recently purcahsed a Fan kit for my 2012 FE390.

I've read the instructions, what i wanted to know is does the Husaberg radiator need to be removed to fit the fan kit, or can it be installed on the bike.

If it does need to be removed can someone tell me the best way to remove it and the coolant to top it back up with? The manual says motorex products but i can't get that from my local auto shop.

Thanks any help will be greatly appreciated.

As far as i know it needs to be removed. I have a 2010 fe 390 and removed mine to install the fan kit. You have to remove the plug at the bottom of the right rad and drain the system anyways so you might as well remove it altogether and make life easier. I don't think you can get a rivet gun in there without removing it anyways. As far as coolant you don't HAVE to use motorex. Any coolant made for motorcycles would be fine. It is recommended to completely drain the system and refill it if you aren't using motorex because some coolants should not be mixed.

Ah right I didn't think of that, that plug has to come out to put the sensor in anyway. Hmm I don't really want to drain the whole entire system, might ring my dealer and see if he can hook me up with the right coolant to make life easy that way ill just drain the right radiator take the hose off fit the fan put it back togethor and top it up.

Hi Thurston

You can just drain it into a container and when your finished pour it back in... if it still needs a top up just add some distilled water. You don't need to drain the whole system.. just down to the bottom rad hose it's realy quite easy.

Thanks heaps tazer i can't beleive i didn't think of that... My brains not with it this week! Just waiting to get my new B&B rad guards then ill fit them both at the same time :D

Oops. What if you just use plain ol' Prestone green, 50/50 mix? Could this be why my cooling system is full of white scummy blobs?

I spoke to my dealer yesterday and he said it'd be just as easy to drain the whole system... i looked into my manual and I'm now kicking myself at how easy it is to drain the entire system on the Husabergs one bolts and radiator cap and presto!

He recommended that I use the brand Tri-Zone (I'm from Australia) and specified that it be the Anti-boil stuff and he said I can buy the Pre-mix or just mix it myself 50/50

Anyone got anything negative about the Tri-zone coolant? Would like to hear it before i go out and buy some.

Thanks

Plain green Prestone, which is silicate-free, should be fine in motorcycles.

Just remember, you can't mix automotive coolant and motorcycle coolant. One is Ethylene Glycol and the other is Propylene Glycol. The two do not mix well and many times cause globs of colored mess that can block up a cooling ports.

That's probably what happened. I added automotive the first few times it boiled over; have drained it a couple times now, but didn't flush...

when i did my ktm fan i didn't remove it ,niether did i drain it! undid the blanking plug and stuck my thumb over the hole quickly so as to lose as little as possible ..had the sensor ready and just got it in as quickly as i could ..you would likely be suprised how little coolant was lost ..can't be that different can they?
