Failing starter sprague bearing

I'm not 100% sure what happened, but from one moment to the other the starter doesn't work anymore. It sounds like starter is spinning but doesn't crank the engine at all. I had a look at well known problems in the owners doc but this one seems different? Or is it a failing starter sprague bearing? I never had problems with the starter and it always started on the button, cold or warm. What would be the first item to check? Do I need to drain the oil and remove a lot of parts?
It's a 03 FE 501E.
Thanks in advance!

cheesy

i described the noise in the doc that a slipping sprague made.

i stood with arkley last week and he said "i think i have a slipping sprague?". i said "does it make a
kee -hoooooaaaawww noise?" no he says and as he hit the button THAT was the noise!!!!

i can only say that if that is the noise you get then that is the sprague slipping. you can sometimes catch it right by tapping the starter button right?

there is a possible cure that we are waiting (painfully slow some members) for results from:
This is the thread hannu found:

This is the thread he put it in:

This is my thread asking for action:

please join in and find out if this works. i think it's more important that people can grab a spring rather than chop one up. so if you find one let us know please?

@ Chilledspode; thanks for that great link! That's a very clear explanation!
@ Taffy; I just cleaned my bike and had a good look and listen, to me the sound is a free spinning starter motor without any sign of even trying to crank the engine. I tried it warm and cold and with a gentle tap of the trustworthy hammer but it's all a no go. It just spins at top rev's. Also, as I explained, it happened from one moment to the other so I kind of expect that something just broke?

Any idea's on this one?

Thanks!

OK, back again. I just opened the cover on the clutch side to have a closer look at the sprague thingy. It's obvious that you can turn it over to one side by hand, but if the sprague bearing is broken or it fails to work correctly can you turn it over to the other side by hand or is this never possible? What I mean is; to me it's working perfectly but I don't know how much force you need to see if it works. Before I take the clutch out I would like to know if that's the problem.. BTW the starter motor is working good.

Thanks!

it's handed and can't be turned around. we need a stronger spring to test.

Gear Wheel Slip Clutch

Maybe it is the gear wheel slip clutch slipping, item 8 P/N 250283-01 on page of the 03 parts book (attached).

There was a lot of trouble with this part on the 01-03 Bergs.

In the 01 and early 02 IIRC a backfire of the engine could break the gear teeth on the assembly so they modified the design to include a single disk clutch, which was not fully engineered and usually slipped when using the E-start. It took a few trys to get the design to be repeatable. They finally put a tolerance on the breakaway torque.

Joe

Hi JoeUSA,

That could be the answer. I didn't notice that item nr 8 on the picture has a built in safety break device. I will have a closer look this evening and let you know tomorrow!

Thanks!

i didn't think your bike had this part cheesy? i thought it was solid?

Mr. JoeUSA,

Thanks! You got it spot on! That is the problem. The break device did it's work, it broke. The nut on top has a crack and the two wheels can turn separately. So that's the reason it happened from one moment to the other. I assume I have to buy this part complete?
Now that part of the engine is open what's also worth replacing?

Thanks!

well done joe. sorry cheesy. i never had it so i never knew any better!

Taffy
