Exhaust wrap and rear shock clearance

Hey all,

I have a 2011 FE570. I just installed the 70 Deg Racing subframe tank and I figured while I had the bike stripped down I would take the opportunity to wrap the midpipe exhaust and cut down on heat below the tank. I know it was tight, but I can't recall how much clearance I had between the shock spring and the exhaust prior to the wrap. Now after the wrap I'm a bit concerned.

I initially had the wrap overlapped too much near the hanger bracket and the exhaust was clearly on the shock. The wrap was preventing the exhaust from clearing the frame at the bends and pushing it towards the shock spring. I then rewrapped using a single, barely overlapped, layer.

The problem is the clearance still looks uncomfortably close. As far as I can tell there are no points where the wrap is causing the pipe to be pushed out of alignment, but it's hard to tell for sure. When looking at it by eye it looks like the shock is sitting on the exhaust, but when I have someone sit on it and compress the shock spring it just barely touches the wrap, but it doesn't push on or otherwise move the exhaust. So apparently the clearance of the exhaust to the shock spring is exactly the width of the wrap, probably about a 16th of an inch.

So my question, is that a normal clearance? I was just about ready to take the wrap off and I decided would ask for some advice before I threw out all that hard work.

Thanks!

I've wrapped mine - really tightly with tape about 2" wide. It's certainly close to the spring & shock but there is a clearance - just!

Thanks Greg. It is certainly uncomfortably close! Does the shock touch the wrap, or is there clearance from it?

After installing the 70 deg subframe tank I realize how EVERYTHING on this bike is packed together. It was definitely a "get to know your bike" day. But I took the opportunity to put on a few things while the bike was apart. I installed the tank, wrapped the pipe, put a CV4 Fuel kool thermal shield on the bottom of the main tank and installed that new KTM fuel injector filter in the fuel line at the fuel rail.

My cabinet shelf is now empty :).

I'm going to have the main tank off mine today (I also have a 70 degree tank) for some routine maintenance - I'll post a picture up showing the narrow clearance.

My exhaust wrap has cut the pipe to shock distance down to around 2-3mm. The whole idea of the wrap is to keep the heat in the pipe and shove it out of the tailpipe so the shock spring will be exposed to less heat even though it is now closer to the wrapped pipe. As long as the spring isn't actually rubbing on the wrap then it's not an issue IMO.

Thanks for the pics. I pulled off the wrap, but I found my problem is not the wrap after all. When I tighten the hanger bracket bolt with the rubber bushing it's pulling the exhaust into the shock. I can't figure out why that's happening?? It is touching the shock without the wrap on. It doesn't seem there is any way to adjust the bracket and I didn't have the problem before I pulled the exhaust off. I'm not sure what to do at this point. All I did was pull it off, wrap it and reinstall. I try holding it away from the shock as I tighten the bolt with the rubber bushing but it pulls it right onto the shock. It seems that if I could just spin the bracket a litte it would fix the problem but there is no way to adjust it. I always figure user error(me) in these instances, but it doesn't seem there should be anyway to install it incorrectly...

I had the same problem after wrapping my exhaust. To gain some extra clearance, I put several washers behind the forward mounting tab on the exhaust. Doing this "tilted" the exhaust, in turn, pushing the mid-pipe away from the shock spring. Granted its still tight, but no problem with over 400 miles. Hopes this helps. Joe

Thx. I did that last night but I hate to rig a fix like that on a new bike. I could understand if it was due to the wrap, but at this point I have no wrap on the pipe and it's still on the shock. I think I'm just going to bring it back to the dealer and have them deal with it as it's still under warranty.
