Exhaust questions

When do you know it's time to change the packing material in your exhaust?

I removed the tip since from my 2001 FE to replace it with the one from Sandskipper's 2002 FC. Reason being that the cone from mine is cracked and in bad shape and I cannot just replace the cone but the entire tip.

The FC tip (or "bit") is a lot less restrictive that the one from the FE. The spark arrestor will remain. Has anybody done this "mod" before?

Main question is: when do you know when to change the packing material? Mine is quite dark and looks pretty loaded. I do not think the bike will work a lot better with new packing material, so what would the advantages be?

Last question (Bobzilla you may answer) is: some type of red silicone gel was used to seal the tip and also the headers. What do you think it is and what would you suggest I use myself? It seems to be some high temp RTV, do you know which one it could be?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hey Lefrog,

Unless it is a continuous strand glass fibre packing that is used in car silencers from manufacturers like Volvo for example you'd be surprised at how often you should replace the packing for optimum noise and engine performance. If you haven't replaced it in your 2001 bike, then it is high time to do so.

Poor packing does have an effect on performance.

Any high temp silicon should be fine on the silencer.

With the change in tip you might notice a slight difference in noise and power but it's not going to be worth writing home about.

Cheers,
Simon

Thanks, Simon.

Any packing material is good or should I really invest $30 in some "performance" material?

I am the second owner of this bike, obviously Bob already repacked it from all the silicone I can see.

Hey Lefrog,

In my opinion it depends on what you can get hold of really. The high performance stuff I've come across is usually glass fibre strands with a high mark up!

I get big bags of both continuous glass fibre strands and long rolls of wire wool. Wrap the perforated tube with a nice dollop of the wire wool and then pack the silencer with the glass fibre - not too tight but not too loose either.

As I'm the other side of the pond I can't really help you with a supplier suitable for you at reasonable prices.

Hope this helps,
Simon

Le Frog,

I use" Pro Seal COPPER XS HI-TEMP RTV SILICONE INSTANT GASKET"

Purchased at my friendly auto parts store.

Joe

I've never seen pro-seal around here but my favorite is Permatex Ultra Copper.I've never met a Permatex product yet I didn't like :)

PS,besides being probably the best performing silicones I've used; Ultra Grey is a pefect match for your grey cases and Ultra Blue isn't far off Husa-Blue 8)
