Exhaust Question

Right, got an SPES exhaust on my 600 (Cheers Mr Clarke!) Question is, it has no packing in the end can. It does however, sound awesome. Will it hurt my bike if i just leave it with no packing in? I think i heard someone else doing it. Thanks now! Pete

I can't imagine it would hurt the bike but it will probably hurt the performance with all the tubulence in the end can without packing. It's supposed to be packed relatively tightly so the gases can escape quick whilst the noise can be some what absorbed.

Regards Freaky

I can see where your coming from, the pipe is actually off my old 98 and the one i just bought went on the old one. anyway with the no packing, the bike was flying, but could it have been better, any more takes on the situation?

Pete, pack the damn thing, it wont hurt the performance of the bike, and its not likely to make a substantial impact upon the 'sound', just the 'noise' will be down a bit.

Probably doesent matter if you only race it, rather than trail ride it where you could offend those with delicate ears.

That is the gear, the matt like stuff is meant for 2 strokers as far a i know, some people insist on wrapping the perforated core with a layer of stainless steelwool to help with the high temp breakdown of the glass yarn.

When stainless steel wool or any steel wool for that matter breaks down, it gets blown out the muffler and starts fires like those in Victoria ( AUS) at the start of the year where 200+ people died and no doubt other area's around the world with bone dry forrest, bush and grasslands etc.
This is why you MUST USE A SPARK ARRESTER even with fiberglass.
Fiberglass wool is all thats required.

Fair call, I dont do it myself, just relaying an instruction guide from ADB some months ago by Nick Dole (I think?).

dont have to warn me about the bushfire matter, I lost a very good mate, the only person to perish in the fires here in 2007.

I retract my statement RE the steel wool wrapping.

Grasstrackpete lives 'up north UK', appreciate what you say regarding bush fires caused by hot wire wool but he lives an area of the UK which hasn't seen the sun since 1876 and it was brief then, he could lay the bike down in the forrest, open the petrol cap and throw a match in, the bike would burn but the ground would still be lush, wet and green.
In his case I would recommend wire wool sheeting around the baffle followed by the usual matting, it'll last much longer.

Second that, found the little strands of glass string stuff (apologies for getting technical there!) get blown out a lot quicker than the matting and you can roll it nice and tight around the whole core.

Wash your hands before you go to the bog though!! 8O

I dont piss about, wheeled bike in the other night, stripped everything off it, and in new frame+swingarm, running, 2 hours
