I've been out on the bike a few times since it's now running fine but the rivets on the end cap have come loose with the exhaust pressure. I've been out to the garage tonight to remove the rivets and the end cap from the aluminium can. I seem to remember a post last year when someone recommended using stainless steel rivets. Is this right or is there another fox?
I replaced my rivets several times. putting thicker and thicker rivets in. then put washers behind them to make them tighter! I have now fixed nuts on inside and fitted smooth allen headed bolts { found on suzukis} they look good! and fix the end cap tighter!!!

I use aircraft rivets, they are called cherrymax, they are a mix of aluminium and titanium, and squeeze up very tight, that tight you actually need a hydraulic/pnuematic tool to install them. I have not had one come loose yet. Hwever you need to select the correct lentgh begore installing them, but this is the same for all rivets, too long a rivet and it will work loose, and the same with too short a rivet, however if it is too short it will probably snap first.

You must use stainless rivets. Ally ones will always come loose.
For packs of decently priced stainless rivets, go to M & P (http://www.mandp.com) as they do them for all the road bike cans. What you need to do first though is measure the material thickness and the hole diameter to get the right ones. You don't need to worry about self sealing ones.

Ah, that's where I've gone wrong then. When I got the bike the rivets were loose so I just replaced them with what I had which were ally. In fact the original ones were ally also. So I'll get some ss ones tomorrow.

We've now put in stainless steel rivets and the end box in the exhaust has now had the packing replaced. My son went out on the bike to try it out. I don't think the Berg likes a quiet exhaust as when he came back he gave me a handful or the packing which had shot out of the exhaust. The end cap is still firmly in place so how did this happen!? Fortunately a fair amount of the packing still remains in the exhaust so it is quieter than without. Does this Berg have a mind of its own.
