even taller seat!

having noticed the vast improvement in my fortunes when i fitted a factory OEM 'tall seat' - i decided to go one better and had some more foam put in.

i got the local trimmer to pull the old cover off, cut a slit in the OEM foam and add 20mm more foam around the "1/3-from-the-front-2/3-from-the-back-area". the OEM seat cover was heated up and stretched easily to the new dimensions.

the seat is now a 1cm drop from the front nose and then absolutely straight to the back of the seat.

the seat means i am now being a very silly boy on the bike. legs off the pegs 120ing all the 90d corners and not worrying about it. so i found the flicking and general riding to improve... but i found myself riding further back along the seat than i've ever done before-to nearly half way.

luckily i kept the faith, due to the works ride that TBM (a uk bike mag) tested from last summer, i found the bike stuck well and didn't need me sat all over the front of the tank. in that test the works rider said that the PDS system worked well with the rider back in the middle of the bike.

the handlebars aren't high enough for me so this also had an effect on me.
i also may move the footrests but that will take a bit of time to think through.

keep you all informed.

Hey Taffy, I also went to the OEM taller seat and found the riding position much better. I cured the handlebar situation by going to taller bar clamps. I have a set of the Trail tech clamps that I believe are an inch or so taller than stock. I am 6'2" tall and these mods really improved the sit to stand transition and getting forward on the bike. Hope this helps.

:? Does anyone know if the KTM high soft seat will fit the 'o3 FE400 Berg? Does any company make an after market high soft seat that will help my 6'2"+, 275 lbs, with bad lower back enjoy the ride more.

guts racing take the standard seat and fill it. try them. husaberg do a OEM tall seat. your weight and height|? i'd take thwe std seat and have it recovered and filled right out. there is no way you'll regret that!

bender

cheers, yes! raisers are about to be introduced but you were very unfair and forgot to mention that the OEM allen screws are very flat and shallow. finding another p[air like that won't happen so i'll grind the tops off two perfectly healthy screws from the chest.

What do you do the other way? Like lower and such. I don`t want to carry a stepladder. Any ideas?

bill

what can i say? in another post you state that you're 190lbs and 5' 8" tall. i'm 5' 9 1/2" tall. if you're struggling to get your feet down then you need to check your suspension is set correctly. because putting a foot down on the tall seat was a doddle and the even taller seat is also a piece of piss!

get a grip ya big tart and ride the nuts off of it!

Hey Taffy your right about the factory allen bolts being shallow heads, but the tall risers have the bolt sitting lower in the riser, so the bolts do not need to be shaved down. The Trail Tech kit came with some very nice stainless hardware though, the only problem was the kit is for the KTM and the allen bolts were a little short ( 2-3mm). I replaced them with longer stainless units that allowed the nut to be fully threaded on and a thread or two on the bolt exposed. Wild bill, to lower the seating/handlebar relationship, you could remove the seat cover and shave some foam off to get the desired seat hight. I recall reading some old posts in the forums archive about lowering the subframe also, this would require cutting and welding your frame. Fastway and a few others offer adjustable foot pegs that allow you to raise and lower them, lower bars can be had as well. Take care all, time to go rippin.

can you give me a link to fastaway? i may want to raise the pegs as well.

When I was learning to Moto x My instructor told me that if I took my feet off the peg one more time he would use saftey wire and wire my feet to the pegs. He also removed my seat because he said if I learned to turn standing up I would be a better rider. You dont need to touch the ground if you are a good rider. Just jump off when you come to a stop!
Taffy try soem hockey undershorts with the tail bone pad in the seat it will serve two uses keep your butt from being broken when you fall on it and also raise you about 1-2 inches off the seat. Makes standing a shorter movement.

When I raced MX the bike I had then actually set taller than my berg. Overall I don`t have any problems but in the woods sometimes you have to dab to save yourself. My bike still has the FC supension but I have it set about as good as I can. It does good and yes I know how to turn a bike while standing up, no problem. Sometimes you get in a fix where you have to paddle, like a big mudhole, or going up a slick, rooty hill. Thats what I`m talking about. Taffy have you tried a RM bend handlebar? That`s what I have on my bike, a little wide but with barkbusters it works reasonably well. Glad the seat worked out for you.

bobzilla. will this hockey spine thingy make me sit up and ride like i'm the queen? i don't wanna look like i just took one up the poopa!!

i was just pulling your leg there wildbill! i think that the OEM tall seat and mushy 'CRM' type suspension is great for trailing with.

i have gradually evolved as a dirtrider. i'm only in my 6th season now. i felt little or no progress for the last two seasons but this season due to the changes i've made to the bike; i feel i've burst forward again!

regular riding and making changes to the machine have been the answer on this occasion. i still have to dabble when coming out of a 2mph corner on an adverse camber with wet grass under me and a bald tyre! however i have learnt how to do it at it's best!

sure does make you look stupid though - fish out of water? aha!!!!
