hey guys.

we are trying to petition to get LED lights legal here. currently the laws for lights are based solely on size, not brightness. i heard that some european countries had specific LED light laws but im having a hard time finding them. could be language barrier.

can anyone point me to some motorcycle specific LED laws in any country (or if its one set of laws for all of the EU)?

thanks very much!

oh, if anyone wants to sign...

thanks again!

signed mate, its a definate safety improvement and legalisation can only be a good thing ! hope it passes !

thanks!

i still am having no luck finding any of the euro laws regarding LEDs. :(

mmmm. in my experience todate with torches, head lights and various mountain bike systems until you start spending serious money all the LED systems are inferior to more conventional systems.

two of the biggest manufacturese of mountain bike system have only just released LED systems, years behind their rivals as they where honest and said LED's didn't cut the mustard, rather than be fashionable and release something that wasn't as good as what it was replaceing.

the problem with most LED's is that they don't project the light far enough so that when riding at speed you cant see far enough.
ahead.

DOH!

having posted above i realised that i hadn't read the petition and was assuming it was for headlights. So went and read it and see its for taillights and indicators.

which LED's are quite good for. again

to make ammends i've had a look through the UK's vehicle lighting regulations and cant find anything. when i'm in work i'll give a lad i know a bell, who works for the ministry of transport to see if there is anything in the uk

thank you very much cypher!

i have tried googling it. it could be that there simply isnt specific LED laws in europe and my "informant" was mistaken.

yes, it is for indicators and tail light NOT headlight.

everyone feel free to sign, you can sign anonomysly(sp?) too!

LED is the most efficient and most visible and most reliable light sources.Today world is looking for saving resources and energy efficiency.still had to use very old incandescent technology is unreasonable.all signal and backlights should be converted to LEDs.it is ridiculous to prohibit LEDs.In my opinion old incandescent lighting should be prohibited.

the problem here isnt that they are prohibited, its the fact that they say that signals must be at least 3.5"x3.5" in size. luminocity(sp?) isnt even a part of the equation here.

have fun finding LEDs in a housing that is that big! hey, wait. if i rigged up that many LEDs into that big of a housing, id get a ticket for them being too bright! :p

there is no law against led lights in Europe, in fact most cars these days use them. tail lights that is. i bought led tailbulbs for my 2004 husa, but i'm glad the new ones have it preinstalled.

sorry, im not looking for laws against LEDs in europe, rather laws that are pro LED.

im trying to find laws that specifically state provisions regarding the legality (size, brighness, etc. requirements) of LEDs

In Holland (and Europe I think) it's an easy rule; all sold, road legal, bike's need a certificate (type approval) that states that the bike meets all law's in the European countries. That actually means that is the bike has LED lights put on by the factory it's OK. If you install them after wards you can end up with a problem when pulled over. Trail riding, off-roading etc in Holland can only be done with a licensed road legal bike due to insurance issues.
Now the real world; of course we replace the tail lights with LED's, they last much longer. For the headlights Xenon is a good option but still a little expensive.
Hope this helps you!
