Just as the Canadain crew gets ready to jump on the plane for Austria to have another crack at the Iron Giant in Erzberg, top Canuck and new Husaberg pilot Shane Cuthbertson breaks his ankle. :( :?

However, race team manager and all around saint to the off-road world, Fryguy, coughs up a replacement rider at the last minute with mind boggling talent. None of you will know the name but I can tell you that he has a fistfull of Canadian Championships and most of Western Canada's elite riders owe at least some of their skill to trying to keep up with him.

Nice work!!!!

Fry.........comments for the UHE?

Umm...I'll be easy to find. I'll be standing beside you. See following post at a "secret" forum with name of Berg rider removed so you don't skin me

XXXXXX,well what can i say,he is a 5 time Canadian Champ and yesterday he burned 7 litres NON STOP at the track on a berg.He is just so pumped to be riding in his first ever international event, that I think ,he will be happy if or WHEN he finishes Erzberg. But Knowing XXXXX he's going to try to make a statment.Theres no joy riding in his head I am a little emotional now because for me and my best buddy to be riding together in an event like this is just another chapter in our riding careers. We have always pushed each other and taught each other and I believe thats why i am at the level i am at.I told XXXX that he has to do one thing for himself there. At one point in the race he needs to stop for a second and look around, take a breath and say"I'm in fu#*en Austria and i am racing a dirt bike,Cool"!!! XXXX,like in the past, you always caught up to me in a race right at the end and we would battle the rest of the way home. Please lets do it again For me,I'm ready and I know what to expect.I have a different game plan this year.I know that i can finish this event so i am going to sprint it for aslong as i can.I will do very well or not finish......

Wow....Doctor XXXX on the Berg fighting the mountain with his blood brother Party. Graffunder, Bolso and a gimped Moose on crutches. Fryguy, Shocko, Janine, Doug and his crew. The ultimate test of willpower coupled with general mayhem. I was already pissed at myself for not booking a ticket.

Can one of you clowns explain to my pregnant wife and my unspecting and likely disapproving boss why I just bought a ticket to Austria.

Well can someone at least pick me up in Vienna and let me sleep in their bathtub!

Giddeeup!

RE: Re: RE: Erzberg - Last minute rider replacement - Wow!!

All is well in Austria. THe week has been a whirlwind since leaving, arriving and preparing the bike. The Erzberg Rodeo is quite an event, similar to the ISDE in some of the star power is here, but the circus is MUCH bigger!!!!
Its unbelievable how "interesting" event is, so Euro in its passion adn the people who attend. A big thanks to Carl and Martin for their effort in welcoming us Canadians to teh event. They have given us VIP treatment.

As far as results, Jarod Thomas rode to an 83rd position out of the 1500 entries yesterday in the prologue. He had a clean ride, no falls, but a couple adjustments were needed for this mornings 2nd run. His second run went well, he was very happy with his ride. The actual final prologue results are released later today, so then we find out if he was able to improve into the first row of 50 riders.

On a strictly Canadian side of the story, we've done incredibly well. Marty Halmazna, 3 time Erzberg finisher and Last Man Standing finisher rode to a 93rd yesterday. Cory Graffunder flatted a front, fell twice before realizing he had done so, and still finished 63th!!! No doube his ride today will be significantly better. The surprise of the day was Noel Bolso of Calgary....20 yrs old, rode to a 27th on a 530, which he has never riden before!!!! The kid is stoked and has impressed. Another rider from northern BC, whom I don't know except for Chris, finished mid 100s, so he'll qualify for certain. All those Canadians attending will ride tomorrow during a forcasted 34 C degree day!!! We ar eall very happy...

I'll post more results as I'm able

cheers

WOW!!!!!!

This event is another that should be seen by any and all enthusiasts. Hell on Earth for an offroad rider.

We've had an incredible weekend..too much fun

The results show Jared in 38th, cut off at the last check point at the 4 hr mark. In reality he finished the race....they ran the course through the enduro cross course to finish, where Jared was 3 corners from the finish when the horn sounded. For a guy who was coming to pour gas etc and was asked to ride the bike 2 weeks prior to the event, he did a fine job. I can't express how proud I am of him, and our team of support people who prepped the bike. We had no issues with the bike besides a broken shifter after judgement hole.

I have never seem so much burning rubber and boiling coolant....the iron giant is pretty tough on bikes to say the least.

more to come, I'm boarding a plane in a couple hrs from Vienna so I thought I'd drop a line

cheers

I posted this on dualsport.ca and thought I would share:

What an adventure!!

If any of you ever have a chance...this is a must see event. I am extremely proud of all the Canucks that entered this race. There was a huge contingent of Canadians present with 6 entered into the race and a total group of 20+ including support staff and fans.

Noel Bolso and Cory Graffunder both from BC qualified in the front row of 50. Jared Thomas on the Husaberg and the almighty Marty Halmazna, both from Alberta, qualified in the second row. Marty just made the second row with a 98 but it was a mind blowing effort considering he had major technical issues in both qualifiers. Unfortunately, despite being in the factory KTM rig and having David Knight's mechanic of the last 4 years, Julian, as his mechanic for the event (no slight to him intended), Marty's technical woes would follow him into the main event. Its always the little things! He spent way too much time trying to fix his bike on the race course and although it robbed him of achieving his 3rd finish in 3 attempts, he still finished an astounding 60th over all of the 500 starters. 1500 riders attempted to qualify for the 500 spots at the main race.

Young Noel Bolso was having another amazing ride before his big KTM 530 started boiling over, running the fan continously, killing his battery and denying him a finish. Despite all of this, he was in great spirits at the end of the event and was pumped to start getting ready to return to Erzberg next year. He his a simply great guy and has a bright future. He gained priceless experience and will no doubt be better prepared for future events.

Cory Graffunder continued his streak of raising the eyebrows of the global racing community with an impressive 18th overall finish in his first attempt. This kid has got the stuff and continues to build on his already amazing resume. He is very humble and was visibly embarrassed when I asked him to autograph the Erzberg hat that NSman had asked me to get (thank god I remembered to do that as NSman still has my 550 Berg and may have done bad things to it if I had forgotten)!!

And then there is Jared. My friend Jared Thomas on the Husaberg put in a rock solid ride to finish 39th. The official results show that Jared only made it to the second to last checkpoint. The reality is that he cleared that check and made it to enduro cross course at the finish line and was 3 corners, less than 10 seconds or so, from the checkered flag when the horn blew signaling that the cutoff time had occured. I was standing at the finish line screaming my head off along with the rest of the Canadians when he came to the base of the dump truck bucket that represents the finish line. I had not heard the horn and was completely confused when they would not let him ride the last 50 feet.

It was bitter sweet to say the least but the good news is that everybody including the organizers (although unofficially) completely considered Jared a finisher. True to his nature, he was very calm about it all and very pleased with his result. Many people in the same position would have freaked out. We tried to get him to ride over the finish line anyway but he replied in a relaxed manner that he "will do that when he officially finishes"....I'm sure he will be back for another attempt.

This was another mind blowing ride for a guy that originally planned on attending Erzberg to lend support to his best friend Marty and only found out 10 days before leaving that he would be replacing the injured Shane Cuthbertson on the Corner Grass Racing Team (CGRT) Husaberg!!

Speaking of CGRT...what an effort. Lee Fryberger and Richie Cox out did themselves with their preparation and on-site efforts to make the Berg work flawlessly. All Jared had to do is stay out of their way...and of course ride it like he stole it. It was great payoff for a team that has worked very hard to take Canadian racing efforts to a new level and they truly paid the ultimate tribute to their sponsors that allowed them to make their team a reality. It was also great to see Shane Cuthbertson suck it up and make the trip to Austria only days after surgery on his ankle to support his team and of course...his friends. If you could have seen the way that guy moved around the event on crutches all weekend, including scaling up and down hills, without ever losing his ear to ear grin...you would realize how tough, strong and dedicated to the sport he his! The only sad part was that Nick and Jay from Alberta (founders of CGRT) were not there to see the stand up job everyone did. They were busy putting on a race of their own!

I also want to make mention of 2 other Canadian riders that were there. Chris from Fort St. John, BC and Harmon from Ontario. Although I don't think they got the results they were hoping for, I applaud them for making the trip and gaing invaluable experience.

On a final note, Marty "The Party" Halmazna. He had a rough weekend but in the end you could sense the pride he had for his buddy Jared, the young guns, Cory and Noel, and the fact that there was such a huge group of Canucks waving the our flag and screaming for our riders.

He paved the way for Canadians by achieving consistent results on the world stage and regardless of whether or not he realizes it...he made us proud again! I think that Canadian racers have a very bright future ahead of them in international competition and we truly owe it to Marty.

GO CANADA!!

Cheers

Good job gents!! Nice report Mark. I hope it's picked up on TV again this year.

Between fryguy, coffin and cheeseberger thoses guy's are livin the dream for all of us :D l

THnaks Coffin for the words..you say easliy what I can never do!!! LOL I work, you speak...and thank you very much for you skills there. I'm also glad that you Berger, and those like you are able to benefit from our endeavors. As I had written before, I remember the day when this site and its members screamed for marketing dollars spent on racing. We are doign the best we can, and having a whole lot of fun doing it, as I"m sure Cheeseburger will tell you as well.

CGRT is showing its face locally till September, when Shane will travel to Romania to compete in the Red Bull Romaniacs with support from the Romanian Importer. He has been instrumental in our efforts there, so if given the chance, support him, I believe he's username is 'Mototech'.

cheers
