engine ticking under load

Hello all,
So I have an '06 FS650c that seems to have a ticking sound when the engine is under a load. I have checked and re-checked the valves and they are properly adjusted (.013 mm if memory serves). When the engine is simply idling there is no audible ticking sound but when I am riding it I can make out a ticking sound that keeps time with the engine. I have had the bike for a few years now and it hasn't dropped dead yet and the sound has always been there.
I tore the engine apart last year to see if I could diagnose anything and did find a loose primary gear nut. After inspecting everything and tightening things back up the engine is somewhat quieter but the ticking sound is still there. I would really like to take this bike on some extended rides but am leery of an engine problem I just don't know about.
This is the only 4-stoke single I have ever owned so I have no frame of reference as to how they should sound or if they are simply loud in general. Is it normal to have a sound like valves are out of adjustment on these bikes?

Thanks,
Adam

take the rocker inspection covers off and then start the bike. does the noise keep in ryethem with the inlet or the exhaust tappets?

what is left of the cam chain tensioner?

does it sound like a man with a toffee hammer?

Hey Taffy,
Thanks for the reply and sorry it has taken so long before any response. So far I have been able to have a look at the cam chain tensioner and it looks like it has about half of its adjustment left. Gonna try and have a look at the valves tonight. Regarding whether or not it sounds like it is being hit with a toffee hammer I really am not sure what you mean. The ticking is subtle yet consistent and it keeps tempo with the engine RPM's. It doesn't sound as severe as a loose tappet however my only experience with this type of knocking is in old V8's. I am beginning to wonder if it may be the sound of some exhaust gasses coming from one of the couplings at the header or at the slip on. Anyway I will repost when I have had another look at the tappets.

Thanks,
Adam
