engine refresh?

after a while off a bike having not been well i have just picked up a nice 08 fe 450 which has been very well looked after ,massive service history with oil changes every 5 to 8 hours and regular valve checks etc..it was owned by an older guy and it's definately not been ridden hard but it's done 170 odd hours..it's not had piston or indeed any engine work it seems...how many hours can these engines run happily without a major rebuild? will it need rings? piston? what about mains and big end? i have plenty of experience of the rfs exc and newer 390/450 but none with the older motor..haven't ever ridden one though am due to try it tomorrow..of course i understand it's dependent on type of usage but bike sounds great starts first push of the button even from cold which i was told it wouldn't(was advised it was only of use when bike was warm) was also told mains were a weak point? so would apreciate some advice also are there any common mods /upgrades ? by that i mean general ones not performance..thanks

husa 570 = wrong model mate! :D :D

if it has been looked after as you say it doesn't need anything yet. I'd check to see how many clicks are left on the cam chain and that would be it.

known weaknesses are
2008 mains were laterally a bit tight but some suffered and some didn't
the auto decomp spring doesn't function correctly
cam chain goes way before anything else on the engine needs doing
the starter gears slip (especially on fully synthetic oil)

that is about it as far as work goes
dual valve springs make the top end last longer and give back more power
the jetting can be nothing or everything off idle - jerky etc

yes tappets are the same for both but I try to make sure the exhausts are never slightly under the 1/6th turn.

good luck

thanks taff..it ran really well and started easily from getting out of van to the first dozen times on the button (trail ride in snowy north wales) when battery lost its power it didn't want to start though..if i had just stopped for a minute i could kick it into life first kick but if not first kick it had to be bumped.. the one time i went over it did not want to start and thats how i lost the last of the battery .. had to bump her...clutch bite was right at end of lever travel and i heard a bit of spin so i think it needs frictions..i'll service it give it friction plates and a stronger battery (i hear cbr 600?)..is there a start procedure? is there anything that will help once its been over? or when hot etc? any tips would be apreciated..
got to say i liked it though..felt a touch flat and tame off idle having been used to rfs 450 and later ktm and bergs but it did serve to help it keep traction whatever the situation and once a bit of throttle was wound on it went ok ..all in all am really happy with it..what oils best? i have some motul 300 v left 15 40 or 50 that any good?

CBR 600 starter motors are used on the older models as an upgrade.
Battery wise Varta YTZ7S have worked well on both of mine.

And oil, Shell Rimula, our version of the Delo oil they get in the States and Aus, I've only found it on eBay here though.

ok a 7amp i believe is the ticket and the oil i have is 15/ 50 motul v300 fully synth..its expensive oil not cheap stuff so i think i will get away with it as the handbook recomends motorex fully synth 10/50 so its not too far off as to cause an issue i wouldn't think unless someone can tell me otherwise
