engine quick assessment

Hi all, I've acquired a 2005 FE450 in large lumps, seems mostly good. Think it was taken apart pretty much for a clean and service before the last owner lost interest. Plan is to assemble it, do just one enduro and then strip/rebuild the engine fully over the winter. The engine oil wasn't especially clean, but no obvious metal bits and it has good compression.

I will fire it up to see if it sounds basically ok, doesn't smoke etc but I obviously want to avoid grenading it in one race before a full strip, so 3 Q's:

1)Is there a quick way to assess the main bearing basic health (I was going to check end float and radial movement play)
2) ditto big end - given that the barrel is integral, how do I check play? Remove the liner?
3) Are the valves fragile? If the cam and rocker look all ok, would you bother lifting the head?

Any other input welcomed!

Cheers

welcome to UHE! (no name?)
float left to right needs to be 0.5mm and you can check how knackered it is by simply grabbing the crank and clonking it up and down.
big end whilst together/ not really, however, we check the little end by steering the piston left-right-left using your two index fingers!.
also look at the bore at BDC.
valves aren't fragile, not the way you are thinking. one race they will be fine. they'd be fine anyway!

Valves are only fragile if the piston makes contact or foreign item find ways into the cylinder :)

Thanks for the input folks! I will get the engine in the parts washer and then do a crank wiggle! Watch this space
